Sony Plans Full DVR Functionality For PS3

The latest issue of PSM hints at great things to come for Sony's Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable consoles.

 

 

Reprising its performance of two months ago, the latest issue of PSM has begun to hit mailboxes across the nation containing additional insights into the upcoming Playstation World online service.

 

With the push for a full-on competitor to Microsoft's XBox Live service, Sony seems to have taken the concept of 'community' and upped the ante, with PSM reporting that users will have available to them not only the options of voice and text chat, but the ability to create video blogs as well through use of the next generation EyeToy. These blogs would be available to be viewed by all users permitted by the host, and the rumor goes that they would be accessible for viewing even when the console itself is not in use. Another ability of the console would be to save and host gaming sessions if the player so chooses, allowing them to preserve and share with friends (or strangers?) particular gaming moments that they might feel especially proud of.

 

The good news keeps coming, as PSM confirms the PS3's ability to serve in a TiVo-like capacity as a digital video recorder, a la PSX. Not only that, but software is apparently in development that would allow the PSP to serve as a mobile remote control for the PS3, allowing users to browse TV content, schedules, and set-up recordings while on the move. This is in addition to the PS3's ability to stream photos and video to the PSP, and the PSPs ability to capture voice, video, and photos and store them back on the hard drive of the PS3... all possible as long as an Internet connection is present.
