Sony Blu-Ray Player Gets Delayed

Does this impact the PS3 at all?

Sony's own Blu-Ray player has been delayed (via sneaky date changes to it's product page), Gizmodo reports. The $999.95 next-gen DVD player will be beaten to market by Samsung's Blu-Ray player -- which is expected at the end of June. However, what people will wonder is how will (if at all) this Blu-Ray delay affect the PlayStation 3? We contacted Sony to inquire about the apparent delay to their Blu-Ray player and how it will (or won't) affect the PS3. We'll update the story if they get back to us.

Rumour: PS3 Downgrades, External PSU & No Functional Beta's

dot_clear.gif

Some 'Phantom insider' claims we will see the PS3 with downgraded specs than originally planned for Sony's next-gen console. We're looking at lower clock speeds, an external power supply and fully functional PS3 beta's are said not to exist. Sounds rather fishy to me right now.

quote:

Phantom Insider says: Fully functional PS3 betas still do not exist

Red says: hmm

Phantom Insider says: Despite that we have seen a number of downgrades

Red says: clock speed?

Red says: remember it was going to be 3.5 ghz?

Phantom Insider says: And now we have been told that the powersource might be an external 400 watt unit after all

Phantom Insider says: instead of internal as promised

Phantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still cant dissipate the heat to sufficient levels

Phantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too low

Red says: they can't produce them in mass supply still?

Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherz

Red says: were the units at e3 2.8?

Phantom Insider says: yes

Phantom Insider says: and had 2 gigs of ram

Phantom Insider says: dev kits ya know

PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360

From videogames.yahoo.com:

It's been a little over a year since Sony first announced its upcoming PlayStation 3 console. In that time, plenty of hype (not to mention barbs) have flown between the Microsoft and Sony camps, each attempting to tout their machine as the "better" offering. After all, who can forget when Sony's Phil Harrison took the stage at the European Game Developer's Conference in the fall of 2005 and talked critically about Microsoft's plan to release two retail versions of the Xbox 360?

"Are there two versions of the Xbox 360 that people want to buy? I don't know," said Harrison. "I look at those formats. I think it just confuses the audience. They don't know which one to buy, developers don't know which one to create for, and retailers don't know which one to stock...So I think we wouldn't take that strategy. We wouldn't create confusion."

Since the propaganda has been constant on both sides of the fence (strangely, the only thing Microsoft and Sony can seem to agree on is that the Nintendo Wii looks incredibly cool), we decided to sift through all of the available information in order to figure out exactly what both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have to offer, and how they compare.

High-tech Sony patent has gaming potential

New technology to change hardness, tension, shape of an object using electrical charges has possible gaming applications.

patent_screen001.jpg

Sony's US Patent application 20060099808 describes an "electrorheological fluid device and an electronic apparatus, which realize satisfactorily changeable hardness or tension in a portion of the device or apparatus which a human body touches, enabling application to a product that needs to have portability."

Basically, the patent describes electronic devices and displays that are flexible enough to be rolled up or folded when not in use, but become rigid when a small electric current is passed through them. The application lists wide-ranging uses for the technology, and suggests it could be applied to cell phones, PDAs, PCs, remote controls, clocks, glasses, and even game systems.

"The electrorheological fluid device can be applied to, for example, part of a controller of a home-use game machine as another example of the electronic apparatus of the present invention. A user touches a control section of the controller by fingers, and the feeling of touch is controlled by the electrorheological fluid device. For example, if a game player is defeated in a fighting game, the electrorheological fluid device is controlled to become soft in order to improve the realistic sensations in the game."

As of press time, Sony representatives had not responded to GameSpot's requests for comment on the patent's planned uses.
