PSone Games Now Available for PSP

December 4, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment today has released the first five PlayStation games for download via the PlayStation Store. Currently available for play on the PSP, CoolBoarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter and Tekken 2 are on sale for $5.99 each.

Though a PlayStation 3 is required to download the games, they can only be saved directly to a PSP and not temporarily stored on the PS3's hard drive. After purchase, two files are downloaded - the game file (which can be up to 600MB or so) and the license file, a small document that prevents illegal copying.

A number of universal control schemes are available in each game, giving you the option of how to emulate the lack of the L2 and R2 buttons. Each configuration uses either the D-Pad or analog stick for inputting L2 and R2, either by using a directional press to trigger them or alt-shifting the PSP's L and R buttons.

By default, each game's description on the PlayStation Store comes with this bit of text: "This title has been converted from the original PlayStation disc to the PSP system. Consequently, there may be times where the title plays differently from the PlayStation disc version, or where some features do not function properly. This version does not support PlayStation peripherals (Controller, Memory Card, Multitap, etc.), therefore functionality such as multiplayer, versus, and co-op modes will not be available."

Meta Review: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

dot_clear.gif

Hideo Kojima's legendary Metal Gear Solid series makes its transition onto the PSP and we're delighted to relay that it's ALL GOOD! Some of the gaming media are even touting that this game pushes the limits of the PSP and puts in a stellar performance on Sony's shiny handheld platform.

Meta Review for MGS: Portable Ops

* 1UP, 9.5/10 - "A game that essentially pushes the PSP in all of its features: graphics, portability, Internet, extra hardware doohickeys, and multiplayer. Sure, it might have hiccups (occasional ghosting, quirky A.I., the one analog nub), but Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is not only a fine MGS title -- it's also a damn good showcase for the PSP."

* IGN, 9/10 - "The GPS and WiFi scanning feature is excellently implemented, the online and single player modes are deep, and there are plenty of things to do by tracking down and recruiting new soldiers from various places.

* Yahoo, 8/10 - "As a single-player game, Portable Ops can't match the scope and drama of its predecessors. Of course, with its bite-sized style and team aspect, it doesn't really try to. This is one of the PSP's best multiplayer titles, giving you essentially a two-for-one experience."

Crisis Core to go Playable!

dot_clear.gif

Crisis Core is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII that will finally be playable in the Square Enix booth at Jump Festa. The only problem is that if you want to play it, you have to be in Japan. This is one of those games that makes me want to go out and get a PSP.

Crisis Core will be shown in playable form in the Square Enix booth at Jump Festa, the annual Shueisha held comic/videogame show. The contents of the demo are unknown, but we don't care. What was once vaporware will at last show itself in solid, touchable form!

1UP Awards: PSP earns more nominations than DS

As part of the yearly 1UP awards, the PSP has received more nominations than the DS. The grand totals stand at 31 for the PSP, in relation to the DS' only 22. At least the PSP has finally beaten the DS in something :).

The PSP took a whopping 31 nominations this year in 1UP's annual "1UP Awards." The DS, on the other hand, only received 22. If you're a member of 1UP, now's the chance to rock the vote and show everyone that the PSP really does have an excellent library of games, no matter what Nintendo fanboys may say. Memory Stick PRO-HG to provide users up to 32GB of space

msprohg.jpg

Sony and SanDisk just revealed a new extension of Sony's popular proprietary flash media. The PRO-HG series is "theoretically capable" of sizes up to 32GB, with write speeds of up to 60MB/sec. PSP owners can celebrate that HG line is backwards compatible with the regular PRO series of cards, meaning you'll be able to buy an HG card and use it in your PSP. You won't get the same speed advantage, but you will be able to use the card's ridiculous amount of storage.

Even thinking up ways to fill a 32GB card is mind-boggling for me. Hopefully, we'll see more when CES comes around next month.
