PSP Shipments Drop 75%

January 30, 2007 - Everyone and their DS-playing mom knew this already, but Sony has at last admitted to not making its worldwide shipment targets for the PlayStation 3 in 2006. As part of its third quarter financial report covering 10/2006 to 12/2006, the company announced today that worldwide shipments in 2006 for the new hardware capped off at 1.84 million units, short of the promised 2 million.

North America got most of those units, at 1.03 million. Japan got 810,000 units, with numbers climbing up past a million in the first few weeks of January.

The company is still aiming for 6 million units shipped by the end of March. By then, the PS3 will have launched in Europe.

Other Sony gaming hardware saw declines compared to the same period in the previous year. The PS2 shipped 4.11 million units, down by 23% from last year's 5.36 million units. The PSP shipped 1.76 million units, down by 72% from last year's 6.22 million units.

In software, PS3 saw shipments of 5.2 million units for the year. PSP saw an increase of 24% over the previous year, hitting 21.2 million game titles. PS2 dropped 16% from the previous year, with 78 million games shipped.

All the lowered shipments along with the PS3 launch caused some dark figures for Sony's games division. While sales for the quarter rose 5.6% from the same period last year to 442.8 trillion yen, operating profits dropped sharply from a gain of 67.8 trillion yen last year to a loss of 122.0 trillion yen this year.

The company expects to stop taking losses on PS3 hardware in the next term, Sony CFO (chief financial officer) Nobuyuki Oneda announced at the financial briefing. One means of doing this will be through smaller chip sizes. The company has already started manufacturing CELL chips using a 65 nanometer process, Japan's IT Media reports.

Even with a turn in fortunes on Sony's hardware losses, don't expect a price drop any time soon. Oneda said that Sony is not considering a price drop right now, although something could be possible in 2 or 3 years.

In response to that massive drop in PSP shipments for the quarter, Oneda said that Sony will not be giving on the platform, repeating past promises that a number of ideas are under consideration.

GN: PSP Virtua Tennis indistinguishable from PS3?

igntennis.jpg

"SEGA's Virtua Tennis 3 could be the most accurate console-to-PSP port that we've seen so far. In fact, if you were to play it alongside the PS3 version (which we have in-house and previewed last week), it would be difficult to tell the difference between the two. Impossible as that may sound, it's because of the PlayStation Portable's small LCD screen -- it keeps the resolution and detail discrepancies from being immediately noticeable (they are there; they're just hard to spot."

IGN, you certainly got my attention. How can the PSP match the baby-exploding power of the mighty PS3? Well, it appears that feature for feature, the PSP version matches the PS3. With "pick up and play" gameplay and controls that simply work, it's clear that maybe Sony really does love the PSP.

See Planet Moon hard at work on After Burner

tmpphpswnz4k.jpg

While Planet Moon may be going on to other platforms soon, they're still working on After Burner, another PSP-exclusive from the team that brought you Infected. In an interview with 1UP, the team reveals their special affinity towards the system: "Yeah, we never actually proposed anything but a PSP version of After Burner because it just felt like it was an idea that was perfect for this platform and hopefully, having the chance to play it now, this is the kind of thing you can imagine playing on your PSP quite a bit."

It's nice to see a developer really think about the PSP's strengths: being able to bring great graphics on the go. To see more of Planet Moon, and what their offices look like, check out Matt Leone's 1UP blog.

Promising first look at Hellboy

It's quite a ways off from coming out, but GameVideos gameplay movie of Hellboy for the PSP looks promising even in this very early stage. The title is being developed by Krome Studios who previously made Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and the most recent Spyro game. This is quite a departure content-wise from their typical release, but a character action game isn't so different from an action platformer. This is Krome Studios' first PSP game though, which may be the only snag. Here's hoping Hellboy fans can feel proud picking this one up when it comes out.

View an Alien Syndrome

aliensyndrome.jpg

IGN has up screens and a trailer for SEGA's upcoming Alien Syndrome. The action-RPG is a continuation of the long dormant Alien Syndrome franchise. It's great to have SEGA bring back some of their old franchises, but the graphics and voice acting seemed below average. Of course the game is early in development and the graphics could improve and the voice actors changed. Even if they stay the same, if the game is fun, that alone will trump the audio and visual short comings. What I want to know is what Alien Syndrome fans think of this new iteration? Are you excited or horrified?

Up close with the metallic silver PSP

sexysilver.jpg

sthpark7791 from the PlayStation boards just posted some really sexy pictures of his new import silver PSP. Obviously, it's quite shiny, but he has a few other things to say:

  • It feels "stronger" than the original black PSP.
  • The analog nub has more resistance.
  • Buttons are a lot harder.

So not only is it sexy, it appears to have some added functionality too! This really makes me angry that SCEA still refuses to bring any other color here to the States. What's up with that? Interested importers can pick up a system from Play-Asia for $199, the same cost as a US system. Or, for the poor, you might be interested in simply getting an official replacement faceplate.

More questions about 300 answered

The upcoming 300 game is certainly an interesting one. Why? To start, it's based on a pretty interesting-looking film. Then, it seems to be coming to only one platform: the PSP. While I'm not complaining, it certainly is an interesting decision. This interview (after the cut) shows some of the gorier footage from the game, easily marking 300 as one of the most violent handheld games I've seen so far.

Of course, the lack of a second analog stick proved to be a challenge. The developers got around this by making a fixed camera, which hopefully will alleviate some of the problems faced by so many PSP games. Will they get it right? We'll find out soon enough.

Tales of Destiny 2 nearly tops Japanese sales chart

tmpphph2mlv0.jpg

While Monster Hunter Portable 2nd will surely topple the Japanese software charts next week, this week PSP had a near top-contender with Tales of Destiny 2, an enhanced port of the PS2 RPG classic. With Nintendo products simply dominating the charts, Sony may have to use the PSP as the platform to drive most of its software sales.

  1. Professor Layton and the Mysterious Town - 136,736 units sold last week (new entry / Level-5, DS)
  2. Tales of Destiny 2 - 73,022 (new entry / NamcoBandai, PSP)
  3. Bleach DS 2nd - 45,486 (new entry / Sega, DS)
  4. Death Note - 44,600 (new entry / Konami, DS)
  5. Soul Cradle - 43,253 (new entry / Nippon Ichi, PS2)

The mob lines up for Monster Hunter

monster-hunter-portable-success.jpg

We knew it was going to be big ... but now you can see the frantic crowds trying to grab a copy of the PSP action game, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd. The crowds were so big, you'd think that another console was launching. See more of the chaos and mayhem over at Famitsu.

Of course, will the game meet such incredible fanfare here in the States? Unlikely. But, Japan is where the PSP is struggling the greatest, in comparison to the DS. Certainly, this will give a much-needed boost to our platform over in the land of the rising sun. With US sales toe-to-toe with Nintendo's portable, and this highly successful launch, can anyone really say the PSP is dead?

Interested importers can check out Play Asia to join in the madness.
