When Videogames Hurt

 

 

A videogame maker has finally succeeded in getting kids off the couch and moving around.

But the new approach is turning out to be more exercise than some players bargained for.

Ryan Mercer, a customs broker in Indianapolis, lifts weights several times a week. But that hasn't helped much with the Wii. After playing the boxing game for an hour and a half, his arms, shoulders and torso were aching. "I was soaking wet with sweat, head to toe -- I had to go take a shower," he says. And the next morning? "I had trouble putting my shirt on," says the 21-year-old avid gamer.

Ms. Haefele, who along with her fiancé is also a gamer, has been heeding that advice. Last year, she suffered a tendonitis injury and started wearing an elbow brace. Now, she also wears it when she plays the Wii.

Doctors advice: Stretch out and be sure to take care of any injuries afterwards. "It's just like athletic play," says Lana Kang, an orthopedic hand surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Rumor: Wii VC Games leaked online and Playable

A Nintendo fan website is reporting that virtual console games for the Wii are being leaked online with instructions on how to get them booting from the Wii channel. Please do not undertake in any shady discussion which you know is frowned upon .

Super Mario Galaxy in 60 fps

 

 

There has been some updated info about Super Mario Galaxy that popped up concerning the Nintendo World 2006 events. First up, it appears that Super Mario Galaxy will be playable at future Nintenwo World 2006 events ( I didnʼt know there were going to be more!). That should make some Japanese gamers extremely excited! Second, the game is reported to be running at a silky-smooth 60 frames per second. From the sound of it, they will be showing off the same demo levels that were playable back at E3. Now letʼs get a release date for this title!

 

 

 

Canadians Love Wii

Zelda sales almost 1:1 with the console.

 

An article is up on globeandmail.com citing Nintendo's unexpected successes with the Wii in the most important of regions, Canada. Nintendo Canada won't make an official statement regarding the exact number of units sold, but they were able to say that they did not expect the massive sell out of the Wii that they saw at the country's largest retailers.

 

Nintendo is scrambling to deal with the shortages of Wiis everywhere. Beginning this Thursday and Friday, stores across Canada will begin receiving their second shipments of Wii units. It has been projected that retailers should be receiving up to 50% of their launch day shipments, which would make 25-40 Wiis at most major retail locations.

 

"We're struggling to try and find a solution to a situation in which demand has far outstripped supply," says Pierre-Paul Trepanier of Nintendo Canada. "The expectation was that within a few days (after launch) Nintendo would still be [in] stock everywhere."

Trepanier did confirm that despite the fact that demand is currently far outstripping supply, the company is still on track to ship 4 million units worldwide by the end of 2006. With a little more than one million of those consoles hitting North America, it seems that interest in the console outside the hardcore gaming circle has been much broader than Nintendo could have hoped for.

 

As much as this launch has been a success on the hardware side of things, it has also been hugely successful when it comes to sales of first and third-party software. Some Canadian retailers are reporting that for almost every Wii unit sold, a copy of the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess went with it. Ubisoft's Red Steel came in at second place, with Call of Duty 3, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 following.

 

While the Wii is going strong out of the gate, a console's success is not determined by the first week of sales. December NPD sales data will be slightly more telling of how well the Wii will do in the future, but things are still up in the air at this point.

Baja Mania and Destruction to hit Wii

Two more PS2 titles make the Wii their port of call.

 

 

Conspiracy Entertainment Europe is joining the flood of ports headed to Wii, with both Baja Mania and Baja Destruction headed to Nintendo's new console. Originally developed for the PS2, both titles will feature "an alternative control system, designed exclusively for the Wii platform, utilising the Wii remote's tilt detection to steer and control the vehicles' speed."

 

Baja Mania is the more realistic of the two titles, and is based upon the specialist racing series found in the Baja region of California, where four wheels is not the norm. Reflecting this is the game's inclusion of three dune buggies (four wheels), three "cats" (six wheels) and three trucks (eight wheels). Off road racing is the order of the day, and drivers must select their own route through the open levels, ensuring they hit certain checkpoints along the way.

 

Baja Destruction takes the soul of Mania, but combines it with a sci-fi setting reminiscent of Mad Max. Vehicles in Destruction bristle with high-powered weaponry, allowing victory to be gained by vaporising the opposition, and several of the courses take place in low-gravity environments.

 

Expect both titles to hit the Wii in the first quarter of 2007.

The player can edit maps and levels with custom rules (pct.2) in the "Editor Mode" (pct.1) and send them to a friend.

You can also take photos (inside story or editor mode) and send those to someone from your friendlist (pct.3) as well.
