Ultimately, skulls in Halo 2 were something of an afterthought, a fun but often game-breaking Easter egg that frequently let players do things the level designers had never anticipated. Halo 3, on the other hand, turns them into a basic feature. "Once you beat a mission, you can go back and search through the mission for the various skulls," explains Griesemer. "It's a fully integrated part of Halo 3, so there are lots of skulls strewn throughout the missions.

 

"When you find one," he continues, "you can activate that skull, and when you play through single-player it will have some kind of effect. For example, Iron has the effect of making it so if any co-op player dies, all of them return to their last checkpoint. Each skull makes the game harder or different in some way. Some of them are very simple, but some have crazy effects that really change how the game plays."

 

"The game's real ultimate test will be to beat every mission on Legendary difficulty with all skulls turned on," says Green. "With style."
