Developer-publisher Eidos has revealed that its new studio in Montreal, Québec, first announced earlier this year, has opened its doors to the public, and the company is inaugurating the facility with the announcement of its first project: a third installment of the futuristic first person-shooter/RPG Deus Ex.

"Weʼre pretty much on track on our business plan if not ahead," D'Astous said. "Right now we're almost 80 people. Our business plan is over three years – we have three phases of expansion. The ultimate goal is, by 2009 we should be 350 people."

According to D'Astous, Eidos Montreal currently has two groups -- a Q&A group that is responsible for testing all of the developer's games from anywhere in the world, and an in-house development team that D'Astous says has just passed proof of concept for Deus Ex 3.

"This game was very highly rated at its release in 2000, and we have this great huge mandate to do the third one, and everybody is very excited," added D'Astous.

So how many developers will be working on the game? According to D'Astous, teams will stay small and dev cycles will be lengthier. He stressed, "Weʼre only working on AAA, major titles. Weʼre going to be developing only major AAA games, using only next-gen technology."

Therefore, he continued, "We will want to limit our dev teams to a human-sized team of 80 people at the very highest of the peak in the production cycle. We donʼt want to become a huge studio where thereʼs over 100 people on a title. We want a smaller, multi-discipline group that are tightly knit together. But by doing so, we will give them at least 18 to 24 months for the production cycle."

Deus Ex 3 powered by Tomb Raider

Eidos Montreal boss divulges first real info on the just-announced sequel

Deus Ex 3 is using the new engine powering the Tomb Raider revival, the boss at Eidos Montreal has revealed.

"We chose the Crystal [Dynamics] engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company, the other Eidos studios. Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders - there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties", Stephane D'Astous has told Develop in an interview.

"We just want to all work together on improving the same technology as we develop our game".

Speaking generally about Deus Ex 3, D'Astous admitted that it's "an incredible title to be working on" and a major challenge as a first project for the newly established Eidos Montreal studio. But he was keen to try and reassure us it's in good hands.

"All the developers working on Deus Ex 3 pretty much know the series inside and out - coming here, they were pretty aware of the opportunity and what they could do", D'Astous explained.

"We did our research to find out what worked well, what people enjoyed about it - especially the first game. The second was a success in the eyes of some, but had some ups and downs, so we've tried to identify what worked well in that game.

"Most importantly, we're extracting what worked well and can be applied now. In the five, six years since that series arrived technology has changed significantly and we have to be careful - we don't want to create more of the same. Instead we've identified the features that can be transposed well onto new technology that arrived several years later.

"It's a big mandate we have received - and we take it very seriously", D'Astous added.

The critically acclaimed Deus Ex is regarded by many as the finest PC game ever made, although sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War failed to live up to expectations.

New Deus Ex 3 concept art spotted

It's of a lab!

A piece of concept art from the new Deus Ex has emerged online, depicting a high tech laboratory.

The lab is fairly non-descript, but there are a few details PC Zone's Will Porter just pointed out to us.

If you look closely, there's an augmentation canister in the background and to the right is a mechanical hand and some legs hanging up. The symbol on the floor also looks familiar, but we can't remember where we've seen it.

The image was posted on the deviant art page of a concept designer known as BaronTiERi.

The artist claims to have worked on Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed. Whilst we can't confirm this, his internet presence is quite extensive. We'd be surprised if this was an elaborate fake.
