The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

tes15et.jpg

ob16wk.jpg

ob22tq.jpg

The sequel to Morrowind, and one of the most ambitious role playing games ever to be made, Oblivion will set the standard for open

ended goodness on the 360. Oblivion features a unique AI system that allows every NPC in the world to love, hate, loathe or fear you

based upon your actions, personality, conquests and affiliations, and then respond accordingly based upon those concepts. This will

create a more dynamic and interactive world than has ever been seen before in a role playing game.

Every line of diologue has been voice acted. Every flippin' line from the hundreds of gameplay hours. Apparently the voice acting alone

takes up half of a double sided DVDs space, and the rest of the beautiful world exists in the other half.

Oblivion also features a real physics system, developed completely in house. Every link in a chain is articulate, every object has heft and

weight. Arrows fired into objects with minimal resistance will cause them to move, shatter, break or swing, depending on the situation.

Wood is permeable, meaning that you can fire an arrow into a door, and it will push through a bit before stopping. You can retrieve your

arrows from the door, and by pulling them out, cause it to swing inward.

Dungeons are no longer static environments filled with monsters. Traps, puzzles, epic battles, and strange situations wait for you in the

more than 100 dungeons scattered throughout the landscape.

There is really too much to say, and not enough space for the beauty that is Oblivion. Expect it around March of 2006.

Ninety Nine Nights:

n318mc.jpg

n322xq.jpg

n339ds.jpg

Imagine Dynasty Warriors but with no fog, no visual barricades, perfect image quality and hundreds of detailed enemies on screen

simultaneously. Now picture that running at sixty frames per second, and that is Ninety Nine Nights. One jaw-dropping scene in the trailer

showed an explosion, with hundreds of characters being smoothly tossed into the air. Judging by the trailer, the feel of a massive battle

will be perfectly captured in Ninety Nine Nights.

Giving players the feel of a massive battle is one of the points of the points of the game. How massive? The game's visual engine is

capable of displaying up to 2,000 characters on screen simultaneously. In the gameplay sequences from the trailer, the screen seemed

to be filled with enemies.

Due to be released sometime in the Spring in Japan, it will eventually find its way to American shores, courtesy of Microsoft Games

Studios.

Blue Dragon:

bluedragon11fm.jpg

bluedragon26qs.jpg

The first of two epic RPG projects for Microsoft by Mistwalker, the studio founded by Square-Enix's Hironobu Sakaguchi. Blue Dragon

features characters by designer Akira Toriyama, soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu, and tells the story of a young boy named Shu who has

special adventure with hs two friends and a mythical blue dragon. This is the exact same trio of lead designers who brought Chrono

Trigger to life on the SNES.

Lost Odyssey:

lostodyssey14wi.jpg

lostodyssey29as.jpg

The second of two epic RPG projects for Microsoft by Mistwalker, the studio founded by Square-Enix's Hironobu Sakaguchi. You play as

Kaim, a man who's been sentenced to live for 1,000 years. The game's storyline takes you through Kaim's life as he lives through multiple

generations, becomes a part of many families, falls in and out of love and gets into conflicts. All this is set in a world that is on the verge

of a "mystical industrial revolution," where mankind has attained dark powers. All is quiet on the newsfront for this game, and it will

probably be some time before a playable version exists anywhere... but there is all the hope in the world that a bit of the old Final Fantasy

magic may find its way through in this title.

Sakaguchi, on Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey wrote:

Q: Was it the next-generation Xbox console that led you to work with Microsoft Game Studios (MGS)?

Sakaguchi: Broadly speaking that's certainly true, I definitely wanted a limitless world where I could cram in everything I wanted to do. I

think next-generation consoles are past the threshold of being able to do that. It's like, everything I wanted to express could fit in this

box called the game machine, so I could send it out. While groping for a way to get back into making games I'd sometimes ask outside

creators if they'd be interested in working together, and thanks to the good response I came to think we could do two RPGs. Then I got a

talk from Mr. Maruyama (Xbox business director Yoshihiro Maruyama) a friend I'd worked with before. Hiroshi Kawai (game development

director) who'd worked with me on development (of FF7 and FF9) was also at MGS, and since we understood each other's abilities I felt

things would go smoothly this way. So it wasn't so much that I chose the hardware myself, I was led to the next-generation Xbox by

personal connections.

Q: What's your role on these two games? Also, what kind of games will they be?

Sakaguchi: Basically, I'm the producer, and I'm also writing a lot of the scenarios, including game system design. One of them goes the

realistic route (Lost Odyssey). It will have stylish visuals - this is what I've always been aiming for - it will be a game that gives you the

pleasant sensation of walking among amazing visuals. The story won't be the typical coming-of-age RPG story, the main character is, if

anything, knowledgeable and experienced. But I'd like to try and show how even that kind of person can be moved to laugh by trivial

things, or moved to cry by everyday things. I'm going for a deeper style that shows a bit of psychological depth. For the other game (Blue

Dragon), I want to make an RPG with deformed characters who move with lots of energy. The main character is someone who never gives

up, no matter what hardships he (/she?) undergoes, he grits his teeth and keeps on going.

Q: You have a strong image as a storyteller. Are there any particular rules of thumb or reflections on RPGs that you're using to guide you?

Sakaguchi: Right, well, with each new generation of games my thoughts have changed, so... At the moment, I feel that the sensation of

walking among amazing visuals - that's already been done. But however pretty a game's graphics may be, if they can't be touched they're

just decorations in the end. So I'm thinking I want to aim for a game world with lots of things you can seamlessly interact with in various

ways, for the sense of a world where everything can be touched. Also, as I said before I want to get away from coming-of-age stories, and

create comical or tragic scenes unlike any seen in games before. I'm trying to make something that will feel fresh, and explores the

possibilities of interactivity.

Q: Finally, please say something to the game fans eagerly awaiting your works.

Sakaguchi: The users have appreciated what I myself found fun, they've been tuned in to my wavelength and that's made me very happy

and very grateful. So when making games, I never forget the minimal requirement to satisfy the users who spend their money to buy

them. I believe in the fun these games will deliver, so please look forward to them.

Gears of War:

gearsofwar14kv.jpg

gearsofwar22hv.jpg

A third-person tactical shooter from Epic, running on the Unreal Engine 3. Gears of War thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of

humankindʼs epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the

planet.

Unlike other shooters, Gears of War is all about teamwork in a big way. All game modes, levels and scenarios are designed specifically to

encourage co-operative play, whether it be with A.I. partners or human players (with A.I. teammates designed with specific strengths,

weaknesses and personalities.) On top of that, voice recognition will be available for players, and obviously voice chat to discuss

strategy with your friends. In addition to voice chat, gamers will be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics,

earn player achievements, customize their games, and build and personalize their gamer profiles over Xbox Live.

Mass Effect:

masseffect18ob.jpg

Set 200 years in the future in an epic universe, Mass Effect places gamers in a vast galactic community in danger of being conquered by

a legendary agent gone rogue. A spectacular new vision from legendary developers BioWare, Mass Effect challenges players to lead a

squad of freedom fighters as they struggle against threatening armies to restore peace in the land.

Mass Effect is the first in a trilogy of games with an overarching story. As the first human Specter – sworn defenders of galactic peace –

your mission is to halt the advancing armies of a legendary agent gone rogue. But as you lead your elite team across hostile alien worlds,

you will discover the true threat is far greater than anyone imagined.

Bioware (makers of Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire) promise that not only will this trilogy span the life of the 360 console,

but that there will be episodic content between games that you can download and play over Live, that will fill in gaps in the story

between chapters.

Alan Wake:

alanwake15my.jpg

From Remedy, the makers of Max Payne, comes this psychological action thriller, set in an idyllic all-American small town and its

surroundings in the state of Washington. Alan Wake, the game's protagonist, is a bestselling horror writer, who writes a novel about his

darkest nightmares. In the game, those nightmares come true...

The game features a massive, open world for the players to explore, with mission based exploration in the single player adventure. There

was a bit of activity on the forums about how amazing this game looked when the e3 trailer came along... now the system that can run it

is on the shelves.

xbox Live Arcade

geometrywars1ag.jpg

What is Live Arcade About?

One of the design goals of the Xbox 360 team was to make a system that was accessible to more family members beyond the core

gamers. That means titles that are aren't just about going around and blowing things up (though Geometry Wars definately fits THAT

description). Problem is, it's hard to produce casual titles in the old console model. They just don't work economically. What if you could

create casual game titles, sell them for between $5-$10 and make it really easy to access that content? That's what Microsoft did with

Live Arcade. Unlike prior efforts that required separate boot disks and the like, Arcade is integrated directly into the 360 experience. All

you need to access it is a free silver membership.

Live Arcade is a service designed to speak to non gamers, casual gamers, and retro gamers who lost interest in console gaming when

complexity reared its daunting head. Via a simple, menu driven experience that is built right into the console, users can buy arcade titles

and download them direct to either their hard drive, or their memory card. Much like Steam, their purchases are validated to their xbox

live account, and cannot be used on another machine without signing in as a guest.

Also, with the exception of solo games (such as Hexic and Geometry Wars), all Live Arcade games are designed to allow multiplayer both

online and offline. Get four friends together at your house, or over Live, and enjoy a retro game of gauntlet.

What does Live Arcade have to offer right now?

The following list are of Live Arcade games that are either out now, or will be out in the very near future.

Robotron 2084 - Midway Home Entertainment

What will Live Arcade offer in the future?

There is a promise of 35 titles on Live Arcade by this coming Summer. What these 14 unannounced games will be is anyones guess. What

is known is that Gauntlet, Joust, Smash TV and Geometry Wars have sold very well thus far, and cost the developers little to nothing to

bring them to the service. Statistics like these make me hopeful that Live Arcade will see more titles just like it

XBOX360 FAQS

The console supports wireless controllers, right out of the box, using a proprietary system Microsoft has developed to increase battery

life, and reduce latency, as well as add several features..

Like battery warnings. When your battery is almost out of juice in your Xbox360 controller, you'll automatically get an on-screen warning

notifying you of that fact, and the vibration motors will turn off to conserve energy. You'll also get a persistent visual reminder in the form

of the ring of light on the front of the console and your controller, which will turn amber. When the batteries finally kick the bucket,

games will automatically pause and wait for you to replace the batteries.

It'll also support progressive scan DVD playback out of the box this time. (You won't need a DVD remote)

All games made for the Xbox360 will be required to support Xbox LIVE in some way, as well as output at a MINIMUM of 720p (720 lines of

progressive scan) HDTV resolution. For you PC gamers, that means a resolution of 1280 x 720.

They've also improved the dashboard sotware expontentially. Now called the Xbox Guide, it allows you to:

- Play music, movies, and look at a slideshow of your pictures

- Transfer files such as pictures, movies, and music from your Camera, MP3 player (including the iPod), Sony PSP, USB flash memory,

MP3/WMA CDs, and through your home network from other computers.

- Not only transfer them, but stream them: In other words, you could connect your iPod up to your Xbox360, and play the music straight

from it, without first transferring any files over.

- ...and do that all at the same time, too. At GC2005 in Europe, a microsoft representative demonstrated playing music from his iPod, while

viewing a picture slideshow comprised of files on his PSP, both hooked up to the Xbox360 at the same time through it's dual front USB

ports. Even cooler, at X05 in Amsterdam, Xbox head honcho Jay Allard demonstrated going into audio chats, slideshows, playing LIVE

Arcade (I'll go into that a bit later) games, and doing a plethora of other things, all while his custom playlist played in the background,

streaming from his iPod.

- And one awesome bonus for WMCE owners -- The Xbox360 will act as a Windows Media Center Extender from the get-go, meaning that

you'll be able to access all your pictures, movies, music, and live television seamlessly, straight from your PC. The Xbox360 GUI video in

the gallery demonstrates this, I really suggest you take a look.

- I'll also let you shutdown the Xbox360 remotely. No more getting up from the couch. Woo.

The console also now starts remotely, right from the controller. Couch potatoes rejoice once more.

Custom soundtracks are now MANDATORY for every game, (so you don't have to listen to those godawful "EA trax"!) What's more, custom

soundtracks are also expanded by a large degree -- like with regular media playback from the dashboard, now not only can you rip music

to the hard drive and play it from there, you can also choose to play the music straight from a portable device (like an iPod or PSP),

streamed. In game. The Kameo video in the gallery demonstrates this, check it out to see this functionality in action.

Xbox LIVE is expanded even more; You'll now be able to:

- Download and play demos of the latest games, just like you would on a PC.

- Download and watch trailers of the latest games and movies

- Voice AND video (using the new Xbox360 webcam) chat with your freinds, over Xbox LIVE, at any time, whether you're in-game,

downloading content, or even while watching a DVD.

- Download and play small and/or classic games like bejeweled, minesweeper, and pac-man from Xbox LIVE Arcade

- ...and play those games WHILE you voice and video chat with your freinds, too.

- Download (and pay for, occasionally) new content straight from the dashboard for your games

- Send, view, and recieve positive and negative feedback straight from the dashboard, or while doing anything else.

- View and interact with a list of the last few gamers you just played with, like Halo2 offers, again, straight from the dashboard, or while

doing anything else.

The "ring of light" around the power button highlights which wireless controller is being used, highlighting player one's activity in the

top-left quadrant. The ring of light also appears on the controllers, where it is used to notify you of which player you are. For instance, if

you're player two, the top right quadrant will be lit, whereas player one's controller will have the top-left quadrant of it's ring of light lit

The ring of light does other things, too. As mentioned earlier, it will notify you of your wireless controller's battery status. But it will also

blink to notify you of important things, like when you recieve a message.

The really cool part is that when the console is laid on its side, (remember, it's built to stand in either a vertical or horizontal orientation

like the Ps2!) it senses this and starts using the top-left quadrant as you see it with the console laid flat. [ read more about this... ]

Among the various options and widgets you'll find on the Xbox360 is the Gamer Profile. The Gamer Profile is a record of you, a list of all

your preferences and your online personality, like your avatar, motto, favorite games, skill level, and other various things. One of the

things that the Gamer Profile will include is your common game settings for different types of games. So for example, you always use

automatic gear in racing games and inverted Y-axis controls in first-person shooters, once you load any racing game or FPS, the game

will automatically load your Gamer Profile settings, and you'll automatically be set up to use an inverted y-axis in every FPS, and an

automatic trasmission in every racing game.

What kind of disc drive will the system use? Will it employ or support Blu-ray or HD-DVD?

Xbox 360 use a standard DVD drive like the original Xbox, though it's said that most games will be dual-layer DVDs, holding over 9GB of

data.

How fast will the DVD drive be?

12X.

Out of the box, will the Xbox 360 play DVDs and will it come with a remote?

Yes, you can play DVD movies out of the box using the wireless or wired controller, but the best experience is with the optional DVD

remote.

What disc formats will the Xbox 360 support?

Progressive-scan DVD movie playback out of the box; DVD and CD music and photo playback out of the box; support for DVD-Video,

DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD.

What other sorts of storage options will be available?

64 MB memory cards can be used to transfer saved games and other small bits of information. Third-party folk will obviously release

larger cards.

What sort of network connection will Xbox 360 have?

A wired Ethernet port is guaranteed. Microsoft has also announced a dual band 5 GHz/ 2.4 GHz wireless network adapter that is powered

by the 360. The estimated retail price is $99.99.

Can gamers use wireless Ethernet access to connect their Xbox 360?

Customers can purchase an additional 802.11a,b, and g peripheral that will allow the system to connect to any wireless access point.

Additionally, if users already use a wireless access point on their current setup, this will be supported in Xbox 360.

Besides the HDD and memory cards, will there be any other sort of official accessories/attachments at launch?

We've seen a USB camera that is used for video chat over Xbox Live. There is also a new headset and a DVD remote that includes the

controller face buttons.

What are the quick and dirty system specs?

3.2 GHz PowerPC processor with 3 cores

ATI custom graphics chip

512MB GDDR3 Unified System Memory

10MB embedded DRAM

12X DVD drive

20GB HDD

Tell me about the graphics chip...

Xbox 360's GPU is based on ATI's next-generation graphics chip, putting it at least one generation beyond its current X850 card for PCs.

The GPU runs at 500MHz and features 48 shader units, which are not directly comparable to traditional pixel pipelines. Rather than

having pixel and vertex shaders work as separated elements like on current PC video cards, each shader unit can perform either pixel or

vertex shading as necessary. This allows the system to move performance to where it's needed, either for more effects or more raw

geometry rendering.

How much RAM will Xbox 360 have?]

The system will have 512MB of GDDR3 unified system memory and 10MB of embedded DRAM for the framebuffer.

What about video RAM?

The Xbox 360 make's use of a shared memory architecture. That means that the system's 512MB of RAM will be used for graphics and

texture memory as well as things like sound, animation source and of course, the actual game code itself.

While the majority of the graphics data will be housed in the shared system RAM, like textures and the like, the video framebuffer will use

NEC's dedicated embedded DRAM technology. Long story short, by embedding the framebuffer RAM directly onto the graphics chip, Xbox

360 will be able to perform post-processing features much more quickly, like anti-aliasing and motion blur. The Xbox 360 has 10MB of

embedded DRAM.

Will Xbox 360 output HD and/or 16:9 video?

Yes. In fact, at E3 this year, Microsoft required anyone showing an Xbox 360 game to run said game on a display with a native resolution

of at least 720p. HD Era indeed. 720p and 1080i are both supported out of the box and are the preferred gaming resolutions, though 480p

and 480i will obviously be supported as well.

Microsoft has mandated that every game support at least 720p with 1080i as an optionally supported resolution. As such, it's also said

that every game is to be designed with widescreen in mind.

What about standard analog 4:3 TV owners?

Analog TV owners needn't fret. 480i will continue to be a supported output resolution; it would be suicide not to have it. But even when

playing on a 4:3 display, games will run in widescreen by default, though gamers will have the option to switch to 4:3 should they so

choose. Designers are very much encouraged to design their games so that they're playable in a 4:3 ratio, with dialog text, HUDs and

those sorts of things appearing properly at 4:3.

What sorts of video connections will be available?

Composite video, S-Video and component are all supported, as is VGA. Nothing has been announced in the way of DVI or HDMI

connections as of yet. Both provide an even better signal than component, and being that Microsoft is being very, very aggressive with

image quality at the moment, it's possible that some sort of DVI and/or HDMI connection may be available in the future.

Will we still need a separate box for S-Video, component or better connections?

Yes, and they will be different than those of the original Xbox. The Premium package will ship with component cables in the box, however.

Will there still be "jaggies"?

No. Partly due to the high resolution output and partly due to the quick full-scene antialiasing the system is capable of, video will be

razor-sharp.

What sort of surround sound support will Xbox 360 have?

The Xbox 360 will support in-game Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II. DD, DPLII and DTS output during DVD playback is also a given.

What kind of audio connections will be available?

Both RCA stereo and optical like the OG Xbox.

What bit and frequency rate will the audio play at?

16-bit/48khz.

There will be an HD-DVD external Drive for the 360

Is it true that I have to use a high definition television with the Xbox 360?

This is false. The Xbox 360 supports many different connections to many types of televisions, from composite connections for standard televisions to component and VGA connections for high definition televisions and computer monitors.

Do all games for the Xbox 360 support high definition?

Yes, all games that are genuine Xbox 360 titles must support at least 720p. Following the October 25th relaunch of Xbox.com there were several games including Oblivion and NBA2K6 that had pages stating that they supported 480i. This is a bit of misinformation or oversight that will be corrected soon. Every indication from Microsoft is that every game that is ever released for the platform must support at least 720p.

What about Xbox games like Halo and Halo 2 played via the backwards compatible mode? Will they be displayed in high definition?

Unknown. There have been rumors and even some implications by Bungie that something is afoot with the Halo series of games in regards to possible high definition display on Xbox 360. However, nothing definitive has come out saying that this is true. Keep your fingers crossed. As far as other games go, nothing has been mentioned at all.

Will games look terrible on anything but high definition televisions?

No, games will not look terrible on standard televisions. Given that the graphics in Xbox 360 games will have greater overall detail in terms of polygon counts and texture sizes, Xbox 360 games will almost certainly look better than games from previous generation consoles, even on standard televisions. As an example, Xbox games look considerably better than, say, Playstation 1 games due to the amount of detail the Xbox was capable of producing in comparison with the Playstation. Similarly, Xbox 360 is more capable of producing detail than any preceding console.

Can I use my computer monitor as my display for the Xbox 360?

Yes, depending on the type of monitor you have. And you will likely be able to play games in high definition too. As long as your monitor supports a resolution of 1280 x 720 or more, you should be able to play Xbox 360 games in high definition. In order to use your monitor you will most likely need to purchase the Xbox 360 VGA HD Cable and connect it to your monitor's VGA port. If you don't have a free VGA port on your monitor, you will either need to switch back and forth or purchase a VGA switcher.

But if I use my monitor, how will I get sound?

With speakers, of course . The Xbox 360 VGA Cable package provides a pair of stereo RCA cables for standard stereo sound as well as an optical digital audio connection (optical digital audio cable not included). You will therefore need at least a set of powered, stereo speakers that accept a pair of standard stereo RCA connections or a fancier surround sound model (e.g. the Logitech z680) that can accept an optical input for the sophisticated gamer.

Another option if you have a sound card available on your PC is to use an external converter and plug the stereo sound output directly into the sound card. That way all of the sound from your Xbox 360 is routed through your computer's standard sound interface.

My HDTV only supports 1080i but I've heard that most games are programmed for 720p. Will I be able to play games in high definition?

Absolutely. Some HDTVs do not include a built-in scaler to handle non-native resolutions. The Xbox 360 has the needed built-in scaler that will scale the output to any resolution you need. In the case of HDTVs that only support 1080i, the game might render to an internal 720p frame buffer, but the output scaler will scale that output up to a 1080i signal that your HDTV can display. Yes, it will still be gorgeous. As an example, both ABC and ESPN-HD broadcast their high definition content in 720p, so if you're receiving that content there's scaling being done somewhere in your equipment chain.

Do I need anything else to play DVDs from my Xbox 360 (like the DVD remote and dongle for the original Xbox)?

No, the Xbox 360 plays DVDs out of the box with no additional purchases required. You can control the DVD player with the game controllers, with the included media remote in the $399 Xbox 360 package, or with the expanded remote available separately.

Does the Xbox 360 display DVD movies in 720p?

No. Early on October 25th when Microsoft relaunched the Xbox.com website, there was a single sentence on one page that said "Watch your DVD movies in glorious 720p from the get go." Excitement and skepticism was shared by all and later in the day the text was changed to "Watch your DVD movies in glorious 480p from the get go." Therefore it appears that this was a minor bit of misinformation. The Xbox 360 does act as a progressive scan, 480p DVD player though when displayed on an HDTV or computer monitor and when using component or VGA cables.

Do games look that much better on an HDTV compared with a regular television? Is it worth the money?

Yes, most people that have experienced HDTV resolution would say it's worth it. High definition television displays either a 1280 x 720 progressive picture in 720p or a 1920 x 1080 interlaced picture in 1080i, for up to six times the overall resolution compared with standard 480i. To make an example, think of playing a game on your computer in 640x480. That's approximately like playing at standard resolution (though even that's better than playing a console on a standard television since standard televisions only produce an interlaced, 480i signal). Now change the resolution to 1280 x 720 or 1600 x 1200 (or 1920 x 1080 if you have it). The amount of information in the picture is vastly greater. In addition the connection technology used for high definition -- component or VGA -- is traditionally capable of transporting a clearer, sharper image than composite or S-video.

Will there be an HDMI/DVI connection on the Xbox 360?

No, not at launch. Microsoft has said that they will provide one "when it makes sense."

Which cables support digital, multi-channel surround sound?

All of them have connections for an optical digital audio cable. The optical digital audio cable itself is not included in any package.

Which cable should I get? Which one has better quality?

In general VGA and component are about the same in terms of picture quality. The only deciding factor between those is the available connector you have on your own display. From there S-Video provides a better picture than the standard composite connection. Note that only the component and VGA cables support high definition signals.
