Metro 2033 First Look

Explore post-apocalyptic Moscow if you dare.

Imagine that you've never seen blue sky, green grass or a sunny day. Then again, you've never seen animals, breathed fresh air or had clean water to drink. All you've really known is the harsh reality of struggling to survive, striking out into the ruined wastelands of a city to forage for equipment and items that could keep you alive. This is the setting of the harsh world of Metro 2033, an upcoming post-apocalyptic first person shooter from 4A Games and THQ that will give players a taste of a devastated Russia and its denizens scratching out a meager existence versus extreme odds. At a recent press event, I checked out some sections of gameplay in an alpha build to see just what kind of dangers can be expected in this frightening new world...

Metro 2033 Screenshots, Preview & Interview

New media from 4A Games' Russian Metro action title, Metro 2033, accompanies a preview and interview article over at IGN:

As somebody that played the final third of the original Assassin's Creed strictly for the narrative, I almost cannot believe I am typing this: there may actually be too much scripting in Metro 2033 right now. It's a shooter. You want to shoot things. But in the first few hours of the game, well over half of it was spent walking, talking, and listening. When you do finally enter into an action scene, it is very carefully orchestrated so that things happen in sequences that never change or adapt. Take a scene with Bourbon, a salty tunnel rat that joins you on the way to one of the stations. You absolutely cannot proceed down a tunnel without giving him adequate time to keep up, even if you do all the dirty work of blasting the giant rat-like monsters called Nosalises or rival station "clans" that attack you.

Metro 2033: “It’s not an open world game”

In case you had any designs on THQ’s Metro 2033 being an open world FPS, a la S.T.A.L.K.E.R., you need to check that shit right now. It isn’t.

It’s a story-driven, atmospheric, first-person shooter. It’s not an open world game,” EP Dean Sharpe told Inside Xbox.

The goal was to make a very believable, atmospheric, story-driven game, and I think that we did that.”

You play as a guy who’s lived underground for most of his life, and gets sent on a world-saving mission. The whole thing’s set after the bomb.

There’s tons of footage through there. Looks wicked. It’s out for PC in the first quarter of next year.
