  • ___________________________________________________

ISSUE:

PCL XL error pages that print from an HP LaserJet 1200, 1300, 2200, 2300, 3200 or 3300 series product when a PCL 6 printer driver is in use typically indicate a communication issue. Sometimes this issue is caused by an incompatibility between the Enhanced XL language and the software application. PCL XL errors typically appear as follows:

  • PCL XL Error

  • Subsystem: KERNEL

  • Error: IllegalOperatorSequence

  • Position: 52

SOLUTION:

[*]If the configuration page does not print or garbled characters or symbols appear on the page, have the printer serviced. If the configuration page prints correctly, proceed to the next step.

[*]Remove any external pass-through devices such as switchboxes, tape drivers, or scanners.

[*]Reattach the cable to the printer and verify the cable connection.

  • Verify that the parallel cable is IEEE-1284 compliant.

  • Try a different IEEE-1284 cable.

  • Connect the printer directly to the parallel port on the computer. If the printer cannot be directly connected to the computer, try a different network cable or network port on the hub.

  • Verify the USB cable meets specifications
    • USB 1.1 compliant full-speed cable (compatible with USB 2.0 specifications)

    • USB 2 high-speed cable

    • USB specifications limit the length of a USB cable to 5 meters (16.4 feet)

[*]Disable the high-speed and advanced functions on the control panel of the product. (HP LaserJet 2300 series printers only)

  1. Press the Select (c00013597.gif) button on the control panel.
  2. Press the Down Arrow (c00013596.gif) until Configure Device appears in the control panel display and then press Select (c00013597.gif).
  3. Press the Down Arrow (c00013596.gif) until I/O appears in the control panel display and then press Select (c00013597.gif).

  10. Press the Pause/Resume button to return to the Ready state.

[*]Change the printer port mode (on parallel connections only). The parallel port mode of the computer may need to be changed to provide the best performance with an HP LaserJet series printer. ECP mode generally provides the best performance with HP LaserJet series printers. If the ECP port mode option does not work, try other available modes starting with bidirectional mode (bidirectional mode is not available on all computers). The parallel port mode may be changed on most computers by entering setup or accessing the computer's BIOS. Consult the computer's documentation, contact the manufacturer for assistance, or click here for documentation on Changing Parallel Port Modes at the HP Web site .

[*]Disable bidirectional printing support. See the manufacturer documentation that came with the computer for assistance.
