Nintendo to announce several new titles for the core gamer at E3

Considering Nintendoʼs limited upcoming lineup, gamers have known that Nintendo must have something big in store for this yearʼs E3. Fans were teased with a plan to announce a “gamerʼs game” at E3, but much more can be expected at this yearʼs E3. Nintendoʼs Marc Franklin has confirmed that “will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3.” Mr. Franklin also addressed the current third-party situation, noting, “Look at the plans being made by third-party publishers. They realize that Wii is the current platform of choice in this generation, and their bottom lines depend on appealing to the largest base.”

So, will we begin to start seeing less of titles such as Carnival Games and more of titles such as Okami?

Mega Man 9 on the Way?

Capcom may be prepping another real Mega Man title.

These days Mega Man is more interested in card-battling than the side-scrolling platforming we grew up with. Hence our excitement when we noticed publisher/developer Capcom had submitted Mega Man 9 for rating with Australia's Classification Board and Classification Review Board. The organization acts like the Entertainment Software Ratings Board in the U.S. When a game shows up on one of these ratings lists, it's a pretty good indication it's on the way.

The game was filed for multiple platforms. Unfortunately no other details are given. The last game in the original Mega Man canon was part eight, released on the PlayStation and SEGA Saturn back in 1997.

It may have been slow to arrive, but that galaxy far, far away has finally come to Wii. First, with LEGO Star Wars and next with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. But LucasArts may be saving the best for last in the form of a ground-up Wii-exclusive effort based on the upcoming animated movie and TV series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The title, developed by Krome Studios, is set to hit Nintendo's console later this year and it's designed to make full use of the Wii remote. Find out how in our exclusive interview with producer Ken Fox below. We've also been able to use the Force to bring you the first screenshot of the game in motion...

Space Invaders Set for WiiWare

Taito resurrecting classic franchise for Nintendo's download service.

Taito provided an update today on Space Invaders Get Even, the new Wii adaptation of the classic shooting franchise that was first announced back in March. In addition to a release period, the company shared one major bit of news: the game is now being readied as a WiiWare download.

Space Invaders Get Even turns the play field upside down, placing players in control of a force of 100 invaders who are out to destroy a human city. You move your UFO around with the nunchuck, and use the Wiimote for point and click destruction. Your goal is to defeat the boss of each stage before time runs out.

As far as we know, the title was originally meant to be released as a standard Wii release, unless Taito was purposely keeping mum about it being a downloadable game.

Whatever the case, Japanese Wii owners can look forward to this latest WiiWare game some time this Summer.

Hands-on Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2

See what's new in this year's Wii exclusive - and US specific - brawler.

The Clash of Ninja series has been a staple on Nintendo Consoles since the original released on GameCube back in 2006. Since then we've seen two sequels already with Clash of Ninja 2 for GCN, as well as the debut fighter for Wii Clash of Ninja Revolution. It's pre-E3 time again, and we've had a chance to check out the new Clash of Ninja Revolution 2 in its preliminary state. The game is going through quite a few changes this time around – though visually it's nearly the same – so what we've had so far is just a quick glance at what should be a more balanced, visually impressive, and competitive fighter this time around...

Little League World Series Baseball 2008 Preview

Activisionʼs Little League World Series Baseball 2008 aims to bring Little League to living rooms everywhere, or at least in living rooms that are outfitted with a Wii. And with more than 70 million viewers tuning in to watch last yearʼs championship worldwide—broadcast on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 here in the states—itʼs probably safe to say that thereʼs a pretty hefty built-in audience for that kind of experience.

We visited Activision Minneapolis Publishing last week and got a chance to test it out for ourselves. What we found was a game that looks like it will appeal to younger players who are craving something a bit deeper than Wii Sportsʼ ball game while keeping older siblings (and parents) interested, too...

Rock of Ages

Is it a case of "better late than never" for the Wii version of Rock Band?

It would be understandable if Wii owners were offended. After all, Rock Band is only now coming out for the Wii when it's been out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 since last November. Heck, even the PlayStation 2 got its first. But it's obvious that the guys at Harmonix and EA recognize that patience is a virtue, since they've augmented the Wii version of the musical challenge with five songs not originally included in the other versions (though they are available for download), including such rock classics as "Roxanne" by The Police and "Rockaway Beach" by the Ramones. But while this is the final version of the original Rock Band to be released, this is clearly not the end of the Band. We spoke to producer Matt Kelly about the state of the Band and what we can expect from future releases...

Samba de Amigo Hands-on Update

SEGA's shakes us with its latest Samba de Amigo Wii build.

As anyone old enough to own a Dreamcast and have a hundred quid lying around in the year 2000 will contest, Samba de Amigo is the best game ever made. That, fun fans, is official, demonstrable fact and a position we will happily back up with unrestrained physical violence aimed toward any detractors.

Needless to say, when SEGA announced it was set to yank the maraca-waggling franchise out of retirement and onto the Wii (or Dreamcast 2 as we like to call it), our minds were a bewildered mix of glorious delight and nervous trepidation. After all, developer Gearbox isn't exactly known for its proficiency in the rhythm-action field and, well, let's not forget NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, eh, SEGA?

So here's the good news: we've played the latest build of Samba Wii and it's completely brilliant, even at this stage. In fact, we're already shunting this one to the top of our potential Game of the Year list in the UK office (well, this particular writer is and nobody else needs to know). It's that good, and so completely what we wanted from our brand new slab of Samba, this is probably the happiest day of 2008 so far...

Guitar Hero: World Tour First Look

Somehow a casual friendly game is one of the deepest we've seen. See what the new guitar looks like here.

Guitar Hero proved the market for music rhythm games is broader than previously thought. Rock Band took the genre to the next step and made it a more social experience by going beyond the six-string domain. Now Guitar Hero: World Tour is answering back. It's not just about guitars now that the full band is brought in. It's not just about playing classic songs either. World Tour lets you become the rock star in every way possible -- from playing the tunes to making the music itself. I got my first look at the next game in the hit franchise and there's no doubt about it: I'm impressed. Neversoft and Activision didn't sit on their laurels and pump out a cash-in sequel. There's so much new here that it's tough to decide where to begin...

Hands-on NBA Live 09 All-Play

The finals are over, but Wii's year of b-ball has just begun.

You better believe that the first thing we did when booting up NBA Live 09 for Wii was select Play Now, grab the Phoenix Suns, put Shaq on the three point line, and fired away. After last year's rough entry into the NBA world on Wii, we couldn't shake the 80% three point shooting that virtually anyone on the court could pull off, so we were happy to see Diesel himself line up at the top of the arch, fire away, and not come anywhere close to the rim on any of his shots. Score one point right away for NBA Live 09.

Last year wasn't so hot, but we're going to put that out of our minds right now, and pretend it was all just an unpleasant nightmare, as it looks like EA is doing the same thing already, pushing a stronger – but still not perfect – NBA experience on Wii. Our first hands-on with the game was pretty basic, as the game is still very early on in development, but already we're noticing some new aspects of the game that'll make sure this year's NBA Live experience stacks up well above what we've seen so far on Wii...

BioWare Looking At Wii

BioWare have made a name for themselves on the PC. Xbox, too. These days, they're expanding on that with the Sonic RPG, which is in development for the DS. So they're definitely trying to branch out. Something that may well be set to continue, with BioWare's Mark Darrah telling Gamasutra:

"Yeah, we're looking into Wii and PSP as a company, as well, but nothing's been decided, and nothing's been announced. And we are, from styles of games, we are trying to broaden our portfolio."

Jade Empire's Summer Party Games for the Wii? Don't rule it out! :-D

Escape the Museum - Announced

"Although an incredibly successful PC genre, the hunt and find adventure category has yet to be introduced on Wii," said Liz Buckley, Director of Marketing, Majesco. "Escape the Museum's online success coupled with category opportunity and an attractive price point make this an ideal title to bring to market."

In Escape the Museum, a devastating earthquake has rocked the foundations of the National Museum of History and players must help Susan Anderson, who was knocked unconscious by falling debris while searching the museum for survivors, escape from the crumbling building to the safety outside. Thwarted by doors blocked with rubble and tripped alarm systems, players wander through the museum's maze of 12 different hunt and find areas and 25 action-packed adventure scenes, using the Wii Remote to uncover hidden exits and save priceless archaeological artifacts. Along the way, players will solve puzzles, consult a map and access hints to help them inch closer to freedom and a joyful reunion with Susan's lost daughter, Caitlin.

Escape the Museum is being developed by Majesco Studios and will be available in retail outlets this holiday for only $19.99.

Sadness - Interview

176048-1.jpg

The Wiicast was able to secure an exclusive interview with Fog Studioʼs Adam Spencer. Fog studios is the business development partner for the Nibris game “Sadness”.

Before I start typing out this interview Iʼd like to say that there probably isnʼt a person on the Internet that was more critical about Sadness than I was. Iʼm surprised and actually really happy to see that the project is actually real and on track.

Will: Adam, Thanks for being able to talk to me about Sadness. I think the biggest question my readers have for you is ʽIs Sadness real? and if so have you seen any progress made on the game?”

Adam: Sure, Will. Obviously thereʼs only so much I can say. I can tell you for sure that the project is real, theyʼre actively developing it. Thereʼs no publisher for the game yet and as such itʼs impossible for us to say when the game is going to be released. Basically, thatʼs the official statement. Nibris is doing an overhaul to their official site now. Next week theyʼre supposed to launch it and there will be some added information and a couple screenshots.

Will: Are you guys in constant contact with Nibris or do you feel you get long periods of silence like the public does?

Adam: Oh, Yeah. We communicate with them just about every day. Weʼre their development end. We basically manage all of their business development.

Will: Do they send you assets to look at? Have you seen a steady stream of screenshots and video?

Adam: Yeah I see everything that the public sees and we see a few other things as well. Obviously, I canʼt disclose any added information beyond the fact that the game does exist and it is being shopped to publishers but there hasnʼt been a fit just yet.

Will: Okay, Without giving away any details or anything, can you tell me if you have actually seen the game running?

Adam: Yeah, I have.

Will: Obviously, this is a pretty anticipated product even with the small amount of assets shown. Are you guys excited about Nibris finding a publisher for it and see what the gaming communityʼs reaction to the game will be?

Adam: Yeah, of course! We were attracted to Nibris because the game looked really cool and, you know, Iʼm a fan of it myself. We all want to see it released. Weʼre big gamers here.

Will: Thank you so much Adam. You pretty much answered all my major questions. I think the biggest thing was to know that the project is actually coming along. Itʼs interesting to know that there still isnʼt a publisher attached to it but obviously you guys have high hopes that a publisher is going to come along fairly soon or within the next year or so?

Adam: Yeah. Well, I would hope so. I canʼt make any promises whatsoever. I donʼt know what the publishers are going to do or dictate what they do. I wish I could, but I canʼt. I want to see it released just like everybody else.

Will: Thank you so much Adam.

Adam: No problem.

The Wiicast would like to extend itʼs thanks to Fog studios and Adam Spencer for providing this interview.

Nintendo Sues Nyko Over Copies of Wii System Remote Controllers

Nintendo Co., maker of the Wii video-game system, sued accessory seller Nyko Technologies Inc. over what it says is a knock-off of the Nunchuk remote controller used with the popular system.

Nyko sells a wireless Kama Nunchuk designed to work with the Wii system. Nintendo contends the Nyko product copies its patented designs and infringes its trademarks for the Nunchuk name and packaging. The word ``nunchuk'' refers to a martial-arts weapon made from two sticks connected with a chain.

Deadly Creatures: Meet the Tarantula

The stealthy killer fights a rattlesnake and sneaks past man.

In early April, we brought you the first look at Deadly Creatures, a new Wii-exclusive project from talented developer Rainbow Studios (MX vs. ATV Untamed). The atmospheric, dark action-adventure is a long way from dirt-bike racing. You take control of both a dangerous scorpion and a menacing tarantula through different missions, harnessing the abilities of each in order to advance along desert passageways, caves, and manmade structures such as a remote gas station, all the while fighting off a variety of hair-raising foes, from black widows to rattlesnakes. We've already written about the scorpion-based missions, filled with endless critter duels and carnage. Now, though, we've had the chance to check out the tarantula levels and we can state with conviction that if you've got a fear of arachnids, this is not your game...
