Πολύ νιανια:

 

Contrast = seperate phonemes (minimal pairs τύπου the fat cat sat on the mat που έλεγε και η Λασκαράτου, δηλαδή άλλο νόημα)

Predictability = allophones (αν θα είναι aspirated, unreleased κλπ που δεν αλλάζει το νόημα απλά ακούγεται λάθος)

Γιααα πάμε να κάνουμε μια σούμα:

 

--> Phonemically distinct sounds are said to be in Contrast. These are just the ways of saying that two sounds are separate phonemes.

--> Phonemes serve to distinguish words from each other. Hence, finding minimal pairs is the most effective way to show that two sounds are distinct/separate phonemes.

 

--> There are sounds such that the difference between the two could never be the (sole) distinction between words. There are no minimal pairs. They cannot occur in the same environment.
Can we predict the environments? e.g. /t/ is always aspirated when it occurs in the beginning of stressed syllables, /t/ is realized as glottal stop when it occurs at the end of a word etc.The fact that the appearance of [t] etc is predictable is important. These sounds are said to be in complementary distribution.

 

--> Two sounds are said to be in complementary distribution if one sound never occurs in the environment in which the other occurs. If two sounds are in complementary distribution, they are allophones of the same phoneme.

BTW true story το ασανσέρ, μια φορά ανεβαίνοντας σε μπαρ σε όροφο μέσα στο ασανσέρ έλεγα στον άλλο "για να καταλάβεις, το MFC είναι ένας κακός object-oriented wrapper της Microsoft σε C++ πάνω στο σχετικό με GUI τμήμα του Win32 API". Ήταν μια κυρία δίπλα, βάζει τα γέλια και μας κάνει "ρε παιδιά μια ερώτηση, από ποιά χώρα είστε?"

Nenya ευχαριστω πολυ για την απαντηση! Αν σε ενα chart υπαρχουν λεξεις που ξερουμε οτι ολες εχουν διαφορετικο νοημα μεταξυ τους, τοτε εχουν διαφορετικα phonemes και δεν υπαρχουν allophones;
