Mirror’s Edge is 12 hours long

Speaking to Kikizo, EA Dice producer Manuel Llanes has confirmed that Mirror’s Edge is “a Fable” in length.

We’ve aimed around the 12-hour mark,” he said.

Llanes pointed out that the game doesn’t have an open world, but there are variations on routes, which should supply replay value.

Unlike extremely open world games like Oblivion, we decided to have a focused game with a focused storyboard, a focused experience,” he added.

But on the other hand, Faith as a runner is extremely agile, and even just in the [starting] area - and of course bigger areas even more so - they accommodate a number of permutations in how to traverse it.”

Mirror's Edge PC to use PhysX effects

Folks with newer Nvidia cards will get a treat if they grab Mirror's Edge for the PC next year. Nvidia has revealed that the PC flavor of DICE's free-running action game will support PhysX hardware acceleration. All you'll need is a GeForce 8 or better graphics card, and you'll be the envy of your console-using friends (you know, the ones who've already been playing the game for a week and counting).

Here's how Nvidia describes the PhysX enhancements:

With the NVIDIA PhysX physics engine, the world of Mirror's Edge comes to life with real affects [sic] of wind, weapons impact, and in-game movements. Every-day objects within the game become part of the overall experience. Cloth, flags, and banners can now impact weapons and players; ground fog interacts with the player's footsteps; explosions fill the air with smoke and debris; and weapon impacts are enhanced with interactive particles.

The company was kind enough to send us a video of the PhysX goodies in action, too. You'll have to use your imagination when the YouTube blur gets too much, but you get the idea—destructible cloth and interactive volumetric smoke ahoy:

Mirror's Edge should hit PCs early next year. As far as I can tell, this will the first blockbuster title to use PhysX technology since Nvidia's purchase of Ageia in February.

Mirror's Edge PC Release January 13, Time Trial DLC Late January

Following up on an earlier promise for more information at a later date, DICE today announced that the first DLC for Mirror's Edge will be a time trial map pack.

The seven maps will be available for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 for $10 or 800 Microsoft Points. The PlayStation 3 version will also receive an additional map for free.

"The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror's Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack," said DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien, adding, "We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game."

The DLC will ship late January.

DICE also announced that the PC version of the game will ship to North American stores January 13, with the international release following January 16.
