Most of our work...work done by The HeliOS Project involves working with kids one-on-one. We find children that do not have computers due to financial disadvantage

and do our best to give them one. It is indeed gratifying work. I have not had many chances to work with kids in large groups before...I mean working with them in a technical environment.

The government is hoping to launch the first version of a "national operating system" for its computers as early as next year, a senior Communications and Press Ministry official said Thursday.

 

The operating system, for use on the computer systems of government agencies and state-run companies, will be 90 percent based on the open-source Linux operating system, Deputy Communications and Press Minister Ilya Massukh said.

 

He said use of the operating system would be optional for all agencies.

 

The operating system is part of the Information Society program, which the government is planning to implement from September. The program will receive 10 billion rubles ($330 million) in funding per year and includes other technology-related projects such as the creation of an "electronic government."

Έχω την εντύπωση πως η Dell θα αφαιρέσει τα Ubuntu laptop από το on-line μαγαζί της.

Τα αφαιρέσει δεν τα αφαιρέσει έφτιαξε σποτάκι και για να ρίξει χρήμα σε σποτάκι κάτι είδε η Dell

...Η κοινότητα του Eeebuntu μετά από πολλές σκέψεις αποφάσισε να μετατρέψει το codebase της που ήταν το Ubuntu στο Debian Ustable (γνωστού και ως Sid) και το όνομα του νέου λειτουργικό Aurora....Η νέα διανομή εκτός του EeePC θα στοχεύει και σε άλλα netbook αλλά και στις ανάγκες desktop χρήσης....

One Laptop Per Child project founder wants to help the country realize their tablet efforts.

 

Nicholas Negroponte, project founder of One Laptop Per Child, offered to collaborate with India's Ministry of Human Resource Development to realize the country's aspirations for a US$ 35 laptop. OLPC has had a checkered relationship with the MHRD, which initially rejected the OLPC initiative saying, “It would be impossible to justify an expenditure of this scale on a debatable scheme when public funds continue to be in inadequate supply for well-established needs listed in different policy documents," the ministry said.

 

Negroponte's offer is being viewed by many as an attempt at collaboration, something OLPC has failed to adopt in the past. Negroponte has said that competition would hurt the OLPC initiative, but he now seems more willing to embrace competitors.

 

India's US$ 35 laptop is currently unnamed. The device was developed by students and teachers at The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, Mumbai, Chennai and Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. It was built on open source technologies and features a Web browser, a multimedia player, PDF reader, Wi-Fi connectivity, and video conferencing capabilities.
