With an eye for larger adoption of Linux, Google is actively working with open-source developers to integrate its applications in the OS, a Linux developer said on Tuesday.

By working with developers, Google may be trying to push more of its applications in netbooks, low-cost laptops designed to run basic applications for Web surfing and e-mail, said David Liu, Good OS Founder and President, at the Linuxworld conference in San Francisco.

The system runs on Ubuntu Linux

Computer engineer Alan Dechert didn't like what he saw during the controversial vote tallying in Florida in 2000's presidential election.

That was when he decided that there had to be a better way for US citizens to safely and accurately cast their election ballots.

[...]

The system, which was set here at LinuxWorld for show attendees to view and vote in mock elections, runs on PCs loaded with Ubuntu Linux and the free, open source e-voting application created by the consortium.

Confidence grows among Microsoft challengers

Analysis | 08 Aug 2008

IBM and three Linux distributors recently reaped a rich harvest of press publicity when they announced plans to work with local partners in markets around the world to build and distribute

ʽMicrosoft-free desktops'. August is traditionally a slow news month (except for the start of the First World War) because so many people go on holiday, which might help explain the amount of press coverage given to Linux and the three distributors: Canonical/Ubuntu, Novell and Red Hat.

It helped that IBM wheeled out someone prepared to take a pop at Microsoft in keeping with the tenor of the overall message. Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president for IBM Lotus Software, claimed that "the slow adoption of Vista among businesses and budget-conscious CIOs, coupled with the proven success of a new type of Microsoft-free PC in every region, provides an extraordinary window of opportunity for Linux".

Ubuntu-based things do pretty well in techie circles. The consumer space is a different beast, as gOS discovered when mega retailer Wal-Mart blamed poor demand from those sporting baseball caps and mullets for its decision to stop selling PCs loaded with its version on Linux earlier this year.

David Liu, chief executive of Emeryville, California-based gOS, is undaunted. Indeed he is optimistic that Linux can succeed in the consumer market, on "next generation" appliances and the increasingly popular netbooks that offer the "best experiences". To that end, gOS has launched version 3.0 of its consumer-focused Linux operating system, which packs in Google Gadgets.

But Liu also sees a threat on the horizon. Why? OEMs are only flirting with Linux in the consumer space, and that leaves the path clear for Microsoft on netbooks and appliances to duplicate its PC-based Windows empire.

"Linux companies like ourselves need to work closely with people making the next wave of appliance or netbooks... we need to seize it before other people fill the gap," Liu told a LinuxWorld panel on life, now that OEMs are shipping Linux PCs.

With this and other mobile processors set to become more commonplace, gone are the days when ultra portable meant ultra expensive. You can now get a nifty little number for around £200 or less.

Hereʼs how a few of the cheapest models size up alongside their more traditional low-cost counterparts:

Developers from Nokia and Mozilla have been working hard to port the Mozilla Platform and Firefox to Qt and there are now some solid results available. An experimental build of Firefox Qt is available, and you can download the sources from Mozilla's mercurial repository. The plan is to merge the Qt branch into the central Mozilla branch to make the port official. KDE Dot News spoke to developer Oleg Romaxa from Nokia who came to Akademy 2008 from Finland.

Our open source expert foresees the future of Linux: By 2012 the OS will have matured into three basic usage models. Web-based apps rule, virtualization is a breeze, and command-line hacking for basic system configuration is a thing of the past.

Commentary: Attack with a Linux initiative

By John C. Dvorak

Last update: 1:51 p.m. EDT Aug. 15, 2008

BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- If you've gone online to watch the Summer Olympics on your computer, you've found the elaborate NBC Web site done in conjunction with Microsoft Corp. featuring videos from almost all the events, using a new online-video presentation technology called Silverlight.

Silverlight is a direct attack on Adobe Systems Inc.

and its ubiquitous Flash technology. The clips you watch on YouTube are in Flash.

Adobe gives the Flash viewer away free and sells development kits to make millions on the technology originally developed by San Francisco-based Macromedia, bought by Adobe in 2005.

Adobe could port its Creative Suite to Linux

as a shot across Redmond's bow.
