The operating system may be losing its luster. In fact, you could argue that the operating system–Linux, OS X and Windows–will become an application that just happens to boot first. And hardware vendors are on to the OSʼs diminishing importance.

Letʼs connect a few dots:

Quantum GIS 0.11.0, released last month, is a free geographic information system (GIS) application released under the GPL that runs on multiple platforms, including Linux. QGIS can read, edit, and export common GIS file formats. After installing it and using it to work with existing data layers available from official data repositories, performing common spatial analysis tasks, and sharing files and data with the commercial GIS products, I found QGIS has the potential to be a viable alternative to proprietary commercial GIS programs from the likes of ESRI and Intergraph/Geomedia.

My goal was to evaluate how well QGIS could supplement or replace commercial GIS products in small engineering or planning offices like mine. GIS software is both a necessary analysis and mapping tool, and very expensive. The cost of getting GIS software licenses for every planner in my office is far more than we can afford. In recent years, FOSS software has made great strides in providing free or inexpensive alternatives to commonly used proprietary software. QGIS costs significantly less than comparable proprietary software, even when you purchase commercial support.

Linux project lead Linus Torvalds has said it is not easy to become a major contributor to the Linux kernel.

Show related

articles

In an email interview with ZDNet.co.uk on Friday, Torvalds said that, while it is relatively easy for coders and organisations to contribute small patches, the contribution of large patches, developed in isolation, could lead to both new and established contributors becoming frustrated.

"It's definitely not easy to become a 'big contributor'," wrote Torvalds. "For one thing, the kernel is quite complex and big, and it inevitably simply takes time to learn all the rules — not just for the code, but for how the whole development environment works. Similarly, for a new developer, it will take time before people start recognising the name and start trusting the developer to do the right things."

"Follow the money" was Deepthroat's suggestion to journalist investigators in the Watergate scandal. Several decades later, that same advice helps to unravel the mystery of why Microsoft keeps upping its investment in Novell's SUSE Linux certificates...while simultaneously denouncing Linux for violating its intellectual property and generally wishing that Linux would cease to exist.

As context, Microsoft and Novell today announced an expansion of their 2006 interoperability agreement, which included a controversial covenant not to sue over patent infringement. "The investment focuses on enhanced programs from Novell to provide tools, support, training and resources for customers seeking an enterprise-class Linux platform and specifically, the optimal interoperability solution between Microsoft Windows Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server," writes Fox Business.

Commercial sponsor of Ubuntu ® looks to support cross-industry collaboration and promotion to fuel Linux growth

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – August 18, 2008 – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux, today announced that Canonical has become a member of the Foundation.

Canonical is the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, a popular version of the Linux operating system, and supports a wide range of other open source projects including Bazaar, Storm and Upstart. Ubuntu has become a popular choice for the server and desktop as well as for the rapidly emerging areas of netbooks and mobile Internet devices.

Matt Zimmerman is the CTO of the Ubuntu project in Canonical, chairs the Ubuntu Technical Board and leads all engineering efforts for the distribution.

“The Linux Foundation occupies a critical, non-commercial function in the use and popularization of Linux around the world. Weʼve always seen the Linux Foundationʼs value and are pleased to now become an official member and support its activities. We look forward to working with them to continue the march of Linux in all areas of computing,” said Matt Zimmerman, Ubuntu program manager and CTO, Canonical.

Linux netbook uses Chinese chip

A new netbook for European schools runs Linux on a Chinese-designed processor. With a generous 10-inch, 1024x600 display, the 2.4-pound Emtec Gdium boots Mandriva Linux from removable USB flash keys, running it in 512MB of DDR2 RAM on a 900MHz Loongson-2F processor made by STMicroelectronics (ST).

Linux popularity across the globe

http://royal.pingdom.com/?p=340

On a global level, the interest in Linux seems to be the strongest in India, Cuba and Russia, followed by the Czech Republic and Indonesia (and Bangladesh, which has the same regional interest level as Indonesia). The first Western country when looking at regional popularity is Germany which is the 10th country in regards to search popularity for Linux.

Critical: openssh security update

Updated openssh packages are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4,

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.5 Extended

Update Support.

This update has been rated as having critical security impact by the Red

Hat Security Response Team.

OpenSSH is OpenBSD's SSH (Secure SHell) protocol implementation.

Last week Red Hat detected an intrusion on certain of its computer systems

and took immediate action. While the investigation into the intrusion is

on-going, our initial focus was to review and test the distribution

channel we use with our customers, Red Hat Network (RHN) and its associated

security measures. Based on these efforts, we remain highly confident that

our systems and processes prevented the intrusion from compromising RHN or

the content distributed via RHN and accordingly believe that customers who

keep their systems updated using Red Hat Network are not at risk. We are

issuing this alert primarily for those who may obtain Red Hat binary

packages via channels other than those of official Red Hat subscribers.

In connection with the incident, the intruder was able to sign a small

number of OpenSSH packages relating only to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

(i386 and x86_64 architectures only) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86_64

architecture only). As a precautionary measure, we are releasing an

updated version of these packages, and have published a list of the

tampered packages and how to detect them at

http://www.redhat.com/security/data/openssh-blacklist.html

To reiterate, our processes and efforts to date indicate that packages

obtained by Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscribers via Red Hat Network are

not at risk.

These packages also fix a low severity flaw in the way ssh handles X11

cookies when creating X11 forwarding connections. When ssh was unable to

create untrusted cookie, ssh used a trusted cookie instead, possibly

allowing the administrative user of a untrusted remote server, or untrusted

application run on the remote server, to gain unintended access to a users

local X server. (CVE-2007-4752)

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released

errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use

the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at

http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_58_10188

Microsoft granted Page Up Page Down patent

http://www.itwire.com/content/view/20193/53/

If patenting the obvious is considered something of an art form in the world of IT, then Microsoft is undoubtedly an old master. The Page Up Page Down patent it has been granted would seem to confirm this...

US Patent 7,415,666 goes under the snappy title of: "Method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments" and is the latest to be granted to that serial patent application junkie better known as Microsoft.
