Dirt 3 Confirmed

Codemasters Studios vice president Gavin Cheshire has revealed that the company’s currently at work on a sequel to last year’s Colin McRae - Dirt 2.

The executive made the first mention of Dirt 3 during an interview featured in the latest issue of Edge, E213, which hits UK newsagents on March 16 and should be in subscribers' hands now.

Speaking about Codemasters’ studio culture and its position as the last of the big British publishers, he said: “Really, it’s all about letting the teams just innovate. There’s some great stuff coming from Birmingham that’s going into Dirt 3, and obviously you’ve seen Bodycount.

I guess in today’s world, every day you’re dealing with people from all over the world. So it’s a British company and the last bastion of British publishing, and there is some pride in that, but it doesn’t take control of your life. It’s about the culture we’ve created and making the best games you can. Dirt 2: brilliant game but it’s all American accents, so maybe we’re a little over the top with those. Maybe we should fly the flag a bit more.”

Addressing the company’s strategy for its racing franchises, Cheshire said that innovation is the key to success.

There’s an overwhelming arcing vision to all of our racing titles, and Grid is incredibly strong, but we’re lucky enough to be in a position where we’ve got racing games in different areas. Dirt was a complete reboot – we threw away what was going on and redid it completely – and then we rebooted Grid because it wasn’t top gun, and then we rebooted Dirt 2. I’m not saying we’re throwing all the codebase away, but we’re throwing the thoughts away and coming out with something fresh and new. Because if you don’t innovate, you’re dead.”

Dirt 3 details revealed

New title could borrow F1 2010 tech, says Codies

Codemasters is pooling its resources to ensure that the next instalment in its highly successful Dirt franchise will trump last year’s smash hit, Dirt 2.

Due to be re-released on June 9th, Dirt 2 has sold more than 1.7 million units worldwide since its launch back in September. It is the fastest and best-selling game in the series.

Codemasters reports that the game significantly expanded the franchise’s audience, and the firm will build on this for Dirt 3 in order to drive the series’ appeal even further.

We know from the stats we can pull from Dirt.net that a major proportion of players are more casual than ever,” said Codemasters’ brand manager Edward Newby-Robson.

The racing studio is already well underway with the next project and continues to develop the EGO engine and push in-house technology to bring new consumer benefits.

Some features which have as yet not been seen in a Codemasters Rally Studio game will make a welcome return and, of course, it wouldn’t be a Codies game without some new surprises.

Both the brand and development teams have taken great pains to understand our racing community to ensure that future Dirt titles are built with them in mind, whilst keeping the mainstream appeal that the broader range of consumers demand.”

Newby-Robson went on to add that the next instalment in the Dirt franchise could borrow technology from upcoming racer Formula One 2010, thanks to the EGO engine that powers all of Codemasters’ biggest titles.

The nature of a unified engine means features developed for one franchise will benefit others, so you’ll be seeing the dynamic effects in Formula One 2010 in future racing titles,” he said.

This sharing and some healthy competition between studios means players will reap the rewards in the next iteration of the Dirt franchise, with even more extreme environment conditions.”

Mag spills DiRT 3 details

The recently-revealed Codemasters racer DiRT 3, due out on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year, will have "snow and ice, dynamic weather, YouTube uploads, fierce rides and epic tracks, splitscreen support, party modes, an open-world playground and more real-life sponsors and stars than ever," according to the latest issue of Edge magazine.

In the mag, which landed on Eurogamer's desk this morning, chief game designer Matt Horsman says DiRT 3 "is the biggest rally game ever made".

  • A new career mode emphasises working and racing as a team, and starts you off as a "privateer" racing cars from the 90s.

  • There's a mix of modern and classic cars, with the odd legend like the Morris Cooper dropped in just for fun.

  • There are super buggies and RAID trucks, too. All the vehicles are more detailed than before, we're told.

  • 100 routes are promised, stretching from Norway, Aspen and Monte Carlo to the plains of Africa.

  • You can trim your replays and upload them to YouTube. There's a combo system that analyses how close your car is to obstacles before working out your score.

  • Codies has ditched DiRT 2's divisive festival-themed menus and replaced them with a "more stylised" front end. The UK publisher/developer reckons it's got the balance of appealing to US and European fans "bang on" in terms of voice-over and narrative.

  • And, of course, there are party modes, namely: Transporter, Goldrush, Outbreak and Cat 'n' Mouse.
