As part of its Windows 10 press conference today, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore showed off a motion study of a new touchscreen mode for the operating system that's being developed specifically for use in hybrid (notebook-tablet) PCs called "Continuum."

 

No, the new mode has nothing to do with that cool sci-fi TV series about a cop from the future who comes to the present day to stop a group of future terrorists. Rather, its a mode that will allow Windows 10 to switch in between a regular desktop and a full tablet experience for 2-in-1 devices. Microsoft posted the motion study of Continuum (with no sound) on its YouTube site to show it off.

 

Basically, if you have a device like the Surface Pro 3 that has a keyboard attached, the UI in Windows 10 will work in desktop mode. If the keyboard is detached, or if it flips around to show just the touchscreen, Windows 10 will pop up an alert asking the user to go into tablet mode. If the user clicks "Yes". the UI switches so that Modern apps that were working in a windowed mode now take up the entire screen.

 

More importantly, the Start menu can also expand to fill the entire screen, in a way that's similar to the Start screen in Windows 8 and in Windows Phone. It definitely looks like it will be a solid compromise for users who still want the freedom to use both touchscreen and mouse-keyboard controls.

 

The "Continuum" mode won't be a part of the Windows 10 Technical Preview when it goes live on Wednesday, but it's likely to be included when Microsoft launches the consumer preview of the OS in early 2015.

Επειδή ακόμη δεν το έχω καταλάβει..... το metro ui θα αλλάξει ή θα παραμείνει εμφανισιακά ως έχει ?

 

Μου αρέσει όπως είναι τώρα δεν θέλω να το μπασταρδεψει με το desktop.....

Ακομη δεν εχουν μπει τα tablet features.Ουσιαστικα δουλευει μονο με τα desktop και θα αλλαξουν πολλα πραγματα μεχρι το 2015 και το customer preview.

Στο surface δεν το δοκίμασα και δεν θα τα δοκιμάσω μην έχω καμία ασυμβατότητα με κάτι που μου είναι απαραίτητο για την δουλειά μου η μου κάνει τίποτα περίεργα η κρασαρισματα.

Πάντως το έβαλα στο ThinkPad 8 και το αποτέλεσμα ήταν απογοητευτικό.

Τα Windows από μόνα τους δεν αναγνώρισαν ούτε το WiFi ούτε Bt ούτε ηχο.

Και από πάνω είχα μια πολύ προβληματική αφή που το όλο σκηνικό θύμιζε slow motion κινήσεις.

Επίσης η φωτεινότητα ήταν σε μόνιμο βαθμό στο 100% και δεν μπορούσα με τίποτα να την αυξομείωση.

 

Προσπάθησα να εγκαταστήσω drivers των 8.1 και τζίφος. 

Κοινός μεγάλη ασυμβατότητα στη δεδομένη χρονική στιγμή με αυτήν την πολύ πρώιμη έκδοση.

Ίσως με την consumer αρχές 15 να στρώσει θεαματικά.

Από αυτά που διάβασα αυτά που συγκράτησε είναι η ελαφρώς πιο αυξημένες επιδόσεις σε σχέση με το Τ100 και η χαμηλότερη αυτονομία σε σχέση με το μικρο αδερφάκι του.

Στα συν του πληκτρολογίου η επιπλέον full USB θύρα +Ethernet port.

Επίσης το review έγινε στο 32+500 μοντέλο, που αν ήταν σκέτο 32 η 64 τουλάχιστον ως προς την αυτονομία θα είχε διαφορετικό αποτέλεσμα.

 

Επίσης η οθόνη κερδίζει σε φωτεινότητα άλλα χάνει σε αντίθεση και στάθμη μαύρου σε σχέση με Τ100

The T200 could even adorn itself with the value for money medal with a Full HD screen.

 

What surprises us

 

Asus does not optionally offer FHD although many buyers want that.

Η MS το ξεκαθαρισε απο την αρχη οτι δε κανει για τις touchscreen σθσκευες στα αρχικα σταδια του TP και θα πρεπει να αναμενουμε ποτε θα δωσει το πρασινο φως για δοκιμασουμε το touch mode που θα προστεθει αργοτερα!

Microsoft had a big day yesterday and unless you were living under a rock, you likely saw the announcement of Windows 10. The preview, which is available today for download, has some notable gaps that we reported on earlier this year and are worth pointing out.

 

The announcement yesterday was targeted at the enterprise and the enthusiast user. Microsoft knows that it needs to rekindle its relationship with the enterprise and the features announced were primarily for power users. Knowing that, it's not a surprise that many of the 'consumer' features are still locked away in Redmond.

 

1. IE 12

 

IE 12, as we noted when we broke the story, would not be part of the technical preview. So where is it? While we do not have a hard deadline yet, it would make sense to hold that feature until the consumer preview is ready in early 2015.

 

2. Notification Center

 

The lack of a notification is a bit unexpected. Why? Well, it would seem like developers should be aware of this feature so they can start building apps that utilize this functionality. But, Microsoft did not mention the feature during the event. although, we all know that it is coming.

 

It is more than likely that they are letting private groups in on this feature behind close doors so that the big name developers (Facebook, Twitter, etc) can make use of the functionality when it becomes available. More so, even if this feature is not implemented until early 2015, that will still give developers a few months to prepare their apps.

 

3. Cortana

 

Cortana, we know she exists and we have personally seen her in action on internal builds of Windows 10. Alas, as you would expect, Microsoft considers this to be a feature for the consumer and chose to hold it back, again, for the consumer related preview that is coming early next year.

 

4. Nothing about ARM

 

Windows on ARM was not talked about either but like the other features, that platform is targeted at consumers. More so, with Windows on ARM said to be merging with Windows Phone, the user experience may be dramatically different than the current version of the OS.

 

We would not interpret Microsoft saying nothing about this platform to symbolize that it is dead but until they come clean with their intentions for that OS, the speculation will run wild.

 

5. Price

 

It is still far too early for Microsoft to be talking about the business model for Windows 10. Seeing that the OS will not launch for around 9 more months, they will keep pricing details close to the chest for a long time.

 

It is widely believed that, for some users, the upgrade will be free. Those running Windows 8 that are going to Windows 10 will likely not have to pay for the OS but the upgrade fee for those jumping from Windows 7 is still up in the air.

 

6. Satya Nadella

 

Microsoft wanted to make it clear that this was not the 'launch' of Windows 10, at least, that's what we were told. To make this statement, they did not have Nadella come to the event to signify that this was a smaller event for Microsoft.

 

 

Despite that, announcing the next version of your billion dollar line of business is a big deal, and based on the announcement today, this was kick-off for Windows 10. Even though Nadella was busy off traveling in Asia, the hype train for Microsoft's next generation OS has begun even if its CEO was not there to announce the platform.

It may sound a bit crazy, but during the summer when we were posting our many, many scoops about Windows 10, one of the most consistent questions we kept getting was if there were new icons in the builds. At that time, everything was the same as Windows 8 but now that we have our hands on Windows 10, we can start to see new direction for the OS.

 

To no surprise, the icons are going flat and have the 'modern' feel to them. While there may be many of the legacy icons still sticking around, we can see these new ones and understand the direction Microsoft is taking. Based on the small sample, blue, green, white and tan are the primary colors for the icons; we fully expect to see this same theme carried forward and the icons that have not been updated yet, will match this theme.

Well, we can't think of anything here.
