Later career and retirement (2002–2005)[edit]

In the twilight of his career, Miller deferred his leadership role to All-Star teammate Jermaine O'Neal. Miller was an important locker-room leader for his team and served as an inspiration to his teammates who wanted to "win one [a championship] for 'Uncle Reg'". While Miller was no longer the team's leading scorer, he remained a go-to player in crunch time to the end of his career. O'Neal's respect for Miller was most evident on January 4, 2005, when after scoring 55 points against the Milwaukee Bucks, O'Neal agreed to be taken out of the game with 1:43 remaining to preserve Miller's record of 57 points.^[35]

In 2005, following the lengthy suspensions of star teammates O'Neal, Stephen Jackson, and Ron Artest for a brawl with fans in Detroit, Miller averaged nearly 20 points per game for stretches of the season. He scored 39 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 18 at the age of 39.^[36] In January, Miller angrily shot down rumors that he would retire at the end of the season, saying that if he did decide to retire, he would announce it through his sister Cheryl. On February 10, Cheryl, now a sideline reporter for TNT, reported that her brother had told her the previous day that he would indeed retire.^[37][38]

On April 11, in a game against the Toronto Raptors, Miller passed Jerry West to move into 12th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.^[39][40]

Miller's last game was on May 19, 2005, at Conseco Fieldhouse, when the Pacers lost 88–79 to the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, ending the series 4–2.^[41] In the game, Miller led the Pacers with 27 points, making 11 out of 16 field goals including four of eight three-pointers.^[42] When he was taken out with 15.7 seconds to play, the Indianapolis crowd gave him a final standing ovation. Then-Pistons coach (and former Pacers coach) Larry Brown called an additional timeout during which the Pistons players joined in the ovation, a moment which provided closure to Miller's career and to a season that had been overshadowed by the brawl between the two teams.^[43] This won the 2005 Best Moment ESPY Award.^[44]

Αυτή τη στιγμή γίνεται χαμός με αυτή τη συνέντευξη. Ουσιαστικά και οι 2 threw under the bus που λέμε Kerr και Bob Myers. Η συνέντευξη είναι καταπληκτική. Είναι επιπέδου σαν αυτή που είχε κάνει μετά από τόσα χρόνια ο Shaq με τον Kobe για την κόντρα τους. Όμως με την διαφορά ότι μιλάμε για 2 ενεργούς παίχτες. Και ο ένας εξ'άυτών είναι βασικό κομμάτι του οργανισμού ακόμα. Με κάνει να πιστεύω ή ότι θέλουν να φάνε τον Myers (τερτίπια επιπέδου Jordan-Krause) ή ήδη έχει δρομολογηθεί trade (με Simmons λογικά) και δε τον νοιάζει πλέον οπότε και βγάζουν τη δική τους εκδοχή της ιστορίας.

Η άποψή μου είναι ότι πάντα η αλήθεια είναι κάπου στη μέση. Όπως και στο last dance ήταν αισχρό και ανήθικο imo που δαιμονοποίησσν τον Krause έναν πεθαμένο άνθρωπο που δε γίνεται να έχει αντίλογο. έτσι και εδώ δε γίνεται να φταίνε μόνο τα white boys και η corporate America.😁 Είχε βουίξει ο τόπος τότε με την free  agency του KD. Στην Νέα Υόρκη υπήρχαν πανό με τον KD στους knicks done deal (γελάνε και τα τσιμέντα). Ο ίδιος ο KD σε συνεντεύξεις του τότε έλεγε πόσο ωραία είναι η Νέα Υόρκη κλπ. Πιστεύω το είχε μαγειρέψει με kyrie ήδη half season. Ε ο Green δεν είναι κουτός ούτε έχει παρωπίδες, ίσα ίσα είναι πολύ οξυδερκής και τον έκανε confront φόρα παρτίδα σε εκείνο το 1st round game με τους Clippers. Το ότι έγινε μετά και αν ήταν σωστό αυτό που έκανε επιδέχεται πολλές ερμηνείες. Αλλά είναι αποκαλυπτική η συνέντευξη για το παρασκήνιο και το μετά από αυτό το επεισόδιο.

edit: Το game με τους Clippers ήταν νωρίτερα στην regular, που τα κάνει τα πράματα ακόμα πιο awkward για το από πότε την σκεφτόταν να τη κάνει ο KD...
