Cryptic confirms STO out first quarter of 2010

 

Closed beta 'right around the corner'.

 

Star Trek Online, the upcoming MMORPG based on the popular science fiction universe, will be released during the first quarter of 2010, developer Cryptic has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

 

That means it'll be out sometime between January and March next year.

 

Cryptic also teased the launch of a closed beta, saying it's "just around the corner".

 

The news comes from executive producer Craig Zinkievich, who was speaking to VideoGamer.com over the phone from Cryptic Studios' offices in California.

 

He said: "The closed beta is really just right around the corner. I think that there's a press release that's going to go out in just a couple of days."

 

And on the release date proper, Zinkievich confirmed: "Without giving you the date, which I'm not allowed to give out or else the marketing people will come and smack me in the back of the head, I can tell you that the game will be out the first quarter of 2010."

 

Star Trek Online, which fuses space combat with more traditional on-ground combat, is looking hot, as you'll no doubt know if you've read our extensive gamescom preview.

Star Trek Online Closed Beta Phase Begins Today, Sign Up Now

We're happy to announce that we've entered Close Beta as of today, October 22!

Star Trek Online's February Release Confirmed

 

Turns out Amazon and co. were right - Star Trek Online is indeed out next February. To be precise, February 2nd in North America, and February 5th in Europe.

 

Here's hoping for a high-quality launch that avoids the numerous problems which befell Champions Online.

Open Beta dates announced for Star Trek Online

 

Atari and Cryptic announced this evening that the open Beta dates for Star Trek Online will run from January 12 through January 26.

 

Open beta keys will be given out on a first come first serve basis and interested parties should sign up on the official website.

 

“We are excited to announce the dates for the open beta phase as this is one of the final steps in launching Star Trek Online to the public,” said executive producer Craig Zinkievich. “We are looking forward to the launch of our first-of-a-kind MMORPG with anticipation and excitement and we expect Star Trek Online to explode onto the scene, giving fans and gamers a Star Trek experience like no other.”

Star Trek Online: Hands-on, benchmarks, technology preview and new screenshots

 

When talking to the developers we learned that the engine is optimized for dual-core systems - additional cores are not or only slightly utilized. DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 are not supported. FSAA or SSAA can be activated directly in the game. The physics engine is a self-made structure that runs on the server as well as on the clients.
