Nintendo DS

The Nintendo DS (sometimes abbreviated NDS or DS) is a handheld game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo, released in 2004. It is visibly distinguishable by its horizontal clamshell design, similar to the Game Boy Advance SP, and the presence of two displays, the lower of which acts as a touch screen. The system also has a built-in microphone, and supports wireless 802.11b (WiFi) standards,[4] allowing players to interact with each other within short range (30–100 feet, depending on conditions), or over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.

The name "DS" stands for both Dual Screen and Developers' System, the latter of which refers to the features of the handheld designed to encourage innovative gameplay ideas among developers.[5] The system was known as Project Nitro during development.

On March 2, 2006, Nintendo released the Nintendo DS Lite, a redesigned model of the DS, in Japan. It was later released in North America and Europe the following June.

Hands-on: Deep Labyrinth

It's one part Oblivion, one part Narnia.

Along with Summon Night and Super Robot Taisen for GBA, Atlus has one more title on the way for pocket fans in the upcoming months. Deep Labyrinth for Nintendo DS combines the look and feel of traditional Japanese animation with first-person role playing game elements to create a world like no other on the handheld.

Magical Vacation Hands-On

Entitled Magical Starsign, the game is going to hit stores across America on October 23.

-The story is set up similarly to the first game: at the heart of the story are a group of apprentice magicians, all of whom harness the power of a specific star. One day, their teacher gets some ominous news and disappears. Obviously, the kids have to go and save the day, using their powers that they've been slowly mastering all this time.

-One of the key components of the game has to do with the fact that you'll travel across several planets. Because each character utilizes a different source of power, their abilities will be enhanced or diminished based on several factors.

-Combat is strictly a turn-based affair, and everything in battle is handled by the stylus.

-Battles also show off the top-notch graphics of the game. Even though the entire game is sprite-based, the designs of your enemies as well as the starring cast is colorful and quite charming...even with some stereotypes along the way. The enemies have a lot of variety, and even three hours into the game, some of the bosses that you'll encounter actually take up both screens during battle!

Hands-On Mario Hoops 3-on-3

Square Enix and Nintendo steal the show!

Nintendo and Square Enix really have to start working together more often. Years after the Square developed Super Mario RPG charmed SNES owners, the maker of Final Fantasy has gotten another chance at working with the Mario name. Judging by our brief play session at the recent World Hobby Fair in Chiba, Japan, the resulting Mario Hoops 3-on-3 is going to be yet another classic DS title.

-The demo included a standard basketball court as well as a court set on the sands of Noko Noko Beach -- that's right, beach basketball! Although from what we could see, the sand doesn't affect game play. We were able to select from the full Mario cast, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Wario. As the title suggests, you choose three players for your team; the demo did not allow both players to choose the same character.

-You move your character around the court using the D-pad. As you move, your character automatically dribbles. You can tap the screen in order to make the character dribble and rotate in certain directions. Skillful use of this feature lets you dribble over flat item boxes which spit out coins, and evade defenders attempting to steal the ball from you.

-In addition to ball-control, the stylus is used for most every move you'd associate with a basketball game.

-The unique control system and typical Mario antics made for a fun demo. There seems to be quite a bit to the experience as well, from a variety of gameplay techniques to a full set of modes. In addition to the WiFi compatible battle mode that we played at the show, the game includes tournament, exhibition and practice modes.

-The game is due for Japanese release on July 27 under the name Mario Basketball 3on3, so the wait won't be too long.

Disciples II: Dark Prophecy

Disciples II: Dark Prophecy is a turn based strategy game where gamers return to the magic realm of the Sacred Lands. By controlling one of four races - the Empire, the Mountain Clans, the Legions of the Damned and the Undead Hordes - you can battle it out through a harsh campaign in order to appease your God.

Because there are different races, the game can be played multiple times through from different perspectives. With the same user-friendly interface, in-depth character classes, and overall captivating gameplay experience, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy looks like it's going to make an old PC favorite feel new again on the Nintendo DS.

Έχει να με ενθουσιάσει strategy παιχνίδι από το καιρό του Warhammer 4000: Dawn of war.

Και η πλάκα είναι ότι τα γραφικά του παιχνιδιού είναι απλοϊκότατα 2D sprites.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Advance Wars: Dual Strike significantly broadens the scope of this very deep and incredibly fun strategy series while not messing with the fundamentals that made it so great.

- Perfectly tuned, incredibly deep, addictive, and approachable strategic gameplay; tons of different gameplay options make for almost limitless variety; excellent presentation makes marathon gameplay sessions easy on the senses; great artificial intelligence for solo play, plus tons of wi-fi multiplayer options; memorable cast of characters and a good story-driven campaign.

IGN review score:9/10

Gamespy review score:4.5/5

Gamespot review score:9.2/10

G6 Lite For DS - Super Small DS Flash Cart Reviewed!!

dot_clear.gif

Product: G6 Lite For DS

Reviewer: DeVs

Buy G6 Lite 4Gbit Now: $79.99

Official Website: G6Flash.com

Introduction: What Is It?

The G6 Lite is the newest entry into the Nintendo DS mod scene. It has internal memory and comes in 3 “flavors”, a 1G, 2G and 4G (1G = 1 Giga bit = 1024 bit ). It supports both DS and GBA games but also includes emulators for playing FC, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, PCE, SEGA-MS & GG. The unit has a built in Media Player for playing the following formats:

- Dobly AC3 audio frequency file (*. AC3)

- target's file of DVD video (*. VOB)

- wave form sound file of Microsoft (*. WAV)

- MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 file (*. MP2)

- MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3 file (*. MP3)

- Real media file (*. RA, *. RM, *. RAM, *. RMVB)

- MPEG-1 media file (*. Mpeg, *. Mpg)

- MPEG-2 media file (*. M2V)

- Windows media file (*. AVI, *. ASF, *. WMA, *. WMV)

- VCD video file (*. DAT)

- QuickTime media file (*. MOV)

- MPEG-4 media file (*. AVI)

- DivX media file (*. AVI)

The G6 Lite also has a built in PDA program although I was not able to try it out due to it only being in Chinese at the moment.

Part 01: What You Get:

The package arrived in a box and inside the box is a very nice round tin that holds the product. Inside the tin you get 1 G6 Lite (thatʼs the size of the DS Lites GBA dust cover), 1 regular size GBA shell (this is so that if you have a phat DS you can transfer the insides of the G6 Lites contents into the bigger GBA shell for use in the old phat DS units), 1 USB Transfer device (for putting on and removing games and media on the G6 Lite), and 1 mini CD with the G6 Lite software (includes the newest firmware and rom patching software).

gl01a.jpg

Part 02: Size Does Matter

The most obvious advancement in the G6 Lite is itʼs small size. The unit is the exact same size as the GBA Dust Cover that comes with the G6 Lite.

gl02a.jpg

If you donʼt happen to have a DS Lite well then the G6 Lite has you covered there too. The G6 Lite comes with a shell that is the same size as a regular GBA game. This means that if you want to use the G6 Lite with a old phat DS you simply just transfer over the contents of the G6 Lites small DS Lites shell into the bigger Phat DS shell. This is the first unit that fits perfectly into BOTH the DS Lite and the older phat DS.

gl03a.jpg

Combing the G6 Lite with the Passcard3 know would ever know you had a fully moded DS Lite just by looking at it as nothing sticks out of the unit from either slot.

gl04a.jpg gl05a.jpg

Part 03: Loading It Up

The unit comes with a USB Adapter for transferring games and media onto the G6ʼs internal memory.

gl06a.jpg

The usb adapter couldnʼt be any easier to use with the G6. You simply slide the G6 onto the usb adapter as if you were inserting it into a DS.

gl07a.jpg

Next you just pop the unit into any available usb slot on your pc. If your using an older pc (like windows 95, 98,ect) and the unit isnʼt automatically recognized by your pc, the mini cd that comes with the G6 Lite includes the drivers needed. Any new pc will have no problems recognizing the usb unit. The usb unit has a nice blue led on it to let you know that is inserted correctly and working and the blue led blinks when the unit is transferring data between it and the pc.

gl08a.jpg

The G6ʼs small size is only 1 part of the new advancements of the DS mod. Another area where the G6 Lite shines is itʼs software. You use the G6ʼs rom patching software to get games onto the DS. Once the games are on the DS and you boot up the unit your in for a nice treat. The days of the ugly text based interface have been left in the dust by the G6. The G6 has a NICE interface for listing games as not only are the games names listed, but also a nice little picture icon of what the game is, is displayed next to the name of the game.

gl09a.jpg

This nice new feature isnʼt limited to the DS side of things either as there is a picture displayed for GBA games as well.

gl10a.jpg

Part 04: Taking it For A Spin

The main thing I wanted to test on this unit was the speed of the internal memory. With other mod devices where you can use your own CF, SD, or Mini SD you need to use faster memory or some games will display graphic glitches and audio hiccups. To no surprise the G6 Lite played all the DS games I threw at it. The memory was more then fast enough to play troublesome games that require fast memory like The Rub Rabbits, and Metroid Prime with no glitches whatsoever. The unit also plays GBA games with no problems. I tried some of the troublesome games like FFIV, Mario Kart, and Mario & Lugi Super Star Saga and none of them displayed any glitches. Both GBA and DS games save properly as well. The unitʼs text reader is VERY clear and you can easily read a book on the unit without eye strain. The built in media player is another nice feature. It supports many type of media files both audio and video. This turns your DS into a mobile multi media player.

Conclusion - Simply The Best!

After using the G6 Lite for a few hours itʼs easy to see that this unit is king of the DS mod mountain. Itʼs small size and amazing software make it the most advanced mod unit out for the DS at this time.

Positives

+ small size

+ nice software with pictures in the games menu

+ perfect DS support and GBA support

+ built in emulators

+ built in media player

+ built in PDA

+ shell of the G6 Lite is not only white but also glossy to match the shell of the Ds Lite

+ larger GBA shell included for older phat DS units

Negatives

- internal memory is not upgradeable

- non upgradeable internal memory means you cant play large video files

- PDA is only in Chinese so unless you can read Chinese itʼs little useless at the moment
