Hands on Black DS Lite

Black is Beautiful

Mizuguchi and Q Announce New Music Games

Maker of Meteos and Lumines announces new titles for PSP and DS.

Q Entertainment is quickly becoming one of the most prolific development studios in Japan. Following a few big E3 announcements, the latest issue of Famitsu is home to even more games from the studio behind Meteos and Lumines. Bandai Namco Games is set to publish two new Q Entertainment produced titles, the magazine reveals, one for the PSP and one for the DS. Q's Tetsuya Mizuguchi is serving as executive producer on both games.

The PSP will be getting Gunpey-R, short for Gunpey Reverse. The DS will be getting Oto wo Tsunagou! Gunpey Reverse (Connect the Sounds! Gunpey Reverse). Both music puzzle games are based on the 1999 Wonderswan puzzle game Gunpey. The basic Gunpey gameplay has square pieces, each containing a diagonal line, rising from the bottom of the screen toward the top. You move the pieces up and down, attempting to form a line from left to right. The panels then disappear. The game ends early if -- you guessed it -- the pieces reach the top of the play field.

For the PSP title, Q is placing the emphasis on music and video. The game brings back the "skin" concept from Lumines, allowing players to collect themes as they play. Each theme has its own background, complete with animation, and music. The game promises over 40 skin types.

As one might expect, the emphasis for the DS title is on direct controls through the stylus. With the DS version, each time you clear a panel, the game releases a sound. By lining up the sound with the background music, you can make your own music.

You might be wondering about the name of the game. The original Wonderswan version was supervised by the late Gunpei Yokoi, the father of the Game Boy and, later, the Wonder Swan, hence the name "Gunpey."

Both the PSP and DS titles are set for Japanese release this Fall. Namco Bandai has yet to announce stateside releases.

New DS Mech game from Nintendo

Nintendo has an original mech game in development for the DS, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals. Developer Sandlot is hard at work on Chousouju Mecha MG, a mech game where you use the stylus to directly manipulate your mech on the battle field.

You play as Martin, a 13-year-old boy who longs to be an MG (Marionetion Gear) operator. Just as Martin gets his first chance at the controls of an MG, his town comes under attack from the dangerous Automan, a pilot-less robot created by a rival group of MG operators gone astray. Martin faces off successfully against the Automan, and earns enough respect that he's given a central role in the fight against the rival MG operators.

Chousouju Mecha MG is split into a series of missions. Your goal varies according to the mission. Some require that you defeat enemy robots, while others place the emphasis on winning races.

You take control of a variety of different MGs during the missions, with the game promising at least 100. The MG can transform from vehicular to robot forms.

One of the big selling points for the title is sure to be the new form of control. You use the stylus to directly interact with the cockpit controls of you mech. Each mech has a different set of controls, some with special controls for specific weapons. A mech that uses guns, for instance, will have a gun barrel as part of the cockpit; you'll have to use the stylus to load the gun before firing.

Gousouju Mecha MG seems like it will offer a unique robot experience when compared to Nintendo's popular Custom Robo series. The game is currently without a final Japanese release date.

New Super Mario Breaks Half a Million ( In the US )

Converted, that's like four goombillion coins!

You didn't think the Mario franchise had lost its magic, did you? Not only has Nintendo reinvigorated the famous plumber siblings with the critically adored New Super Mario Bros., but now the company has sales numbers showing that Mario love never faltered: in the United States alone, New Super Mario Bros. has surpassed half a million units sold in its first 35 days.

As Nintendo puts it, that's the equivalent of 20 copies of the game being sold every minute since the title's launch on May 15.

No doubt Mario's hopping success also boosted the impressive sales of the DS Lite, which sold more than 136,500 units in its first two days. What better match for a slick portable system than one of gaming's most revered icons?

New Super Mario Bros.

Welcome back, Mario. We missed you.

-New Super Mario Bros. is a terrific 2D side-scroller that makes you think of the old games but never feels like it's just cashing in on past success.

- Terrific control; classic gameplay that still works; great presentation; evokes the original games without feeling shameless.

-It feels like an old-school Mario game; tight control and great level design; tons of hidden secrets to discover; the two-player mode is a fun bonus.

IGN review score: 9.5/10

Gamespot review score: 9/10

Gamespy review score: 5/5

kala aftoi twra piran to mavro??

tespa' date='panther to mario&luigi ti leei san game?aksizei agora?[/quote']

To Mario & Luigi:Partners in time είναι ένα εξαιρετικό JRPG με πολλές προτοτυπίες.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Mario and Luigi pair up with Mario and Luigi for a fun, funny and clever RPG outing.

-The timing based attacks add more depth to the standard RPG battles; it's pretty darn funny; there's a lot of good teamwork puzzles involved between the brothers and the babies.

- Superb gameplay; engaging combat system; meaty quest; wonderful graphics.

-Partners in Time does a fantastic job following up the already fantastic Superstar Saga on the Game Boy Advance. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time has an even crazier story, funnier dialogue, more elaborate puzzles, and more action-based fights than the original game. But even with all the clever additions the Nintendo DS version brings to the table, the original quest is never left in the dust and is still on the same playing field for those who haven't experienced that handheld adventure yet. And though it doesn't explore the Nintendo DS platform on a technical level, Partners in Time definitely approaches the handheld in extremely creative ways.

IGN review score:9/10

Gamespy review score:4.5/5

Gamespot review score: 8.9/10

Nintendo DS Makes Film Debut

The dual-screened system is cast as a super spy gadget.

Remember how in Independence Day Jeff Goldblum uses an Apple PowerBook to upload a nasty computer virus to the big nasty alien ship to finally stop the nasty invasion? That was so cool -- especially for Apple (though for the record, that particular PowerBook had some problems).

Today, Nintendo announced that the DS will take its own "starring role" in a feature film. Upcoming "teen spy thriller" Stormbreaker will feature the Nintendo DS as the "ultimate spy gadget."

Stormbreaker is based on the first book in the hit Alex Rider series by author Anthony Horowitz. When 14-year-old Alex Rider takes the place of his murdered super-spy uncle, he is given a Hot Rod Red Nintendo DS, which he is able to use as an eavesdropping device, a wiretap detector, or -- yes -- a smoke bomb.

nintendo-ds-makes-film-debut-20060627051034775-000.jpg

The trick? No one would suspect a kid with a Nintendo DS to be an undercover agent brandishing a crafty gadget.

Nintendo was careful to point out that it does not intend to make spy-related DS functions available to the general public.

Stormbreaker is scheduled to premier in the U.K. on July 21, and on October 6 in the U.S.

Κι'άλλο κι'άλλο! :D

E3 2006: MechAssault Hands-on

Mechwarrior action comes to the Nintendo DS.

The Microsoft property MechAssault is heading to the Nintendo DS thank to Majesco and development studio Backbone Entertainment, and we wrapped our mitts around the system to romp our giant robot around the world for a few rounds.

In MechAssault, players hop in and out of gigantic, powerful mechanized robotic assault vehicles and run through an assortment of missions that revolve around Mech-to-Mech combat. In our short run with the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo we only experienced the combat portion of the game, but in many missions players will have to leap out of their mech to hack into systems in order unlock doors and affect other elements. The touch screen makes it easy to get in and out of the vehicle, switch weapons, and other controls by fat, thumb sized on-screen buttons.

The game will focus on wireless multiplayer, enabling some serious deathmatching between four players locally. The company wanted to get Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support into the game, but Majesco and Backbone didn't get the required tools in time to get it all implemented.

The game is in full 3D running at 30 frames per second on the Nintendo DS. The action's fast and smooth, though the texture work is a little low-res when you get up close to buildings and mountains. The game offers two different control configurations: D-pad and A, B, X, Y layout, and stylus control to mimic what Metroid Prime Hunter did with its first-person shooter controls. The button configuration is a little on the clunky side, and the stylus control felt a little sluggish.

But, of course, the game at the show floor just hit "beta" status so the version isn't quite as clean as the game will end up when it's released in a few months. A little more tightening up and the game could be one of the top action titles on the Nintendo DS this year.
